VENDOR SOLICITATION QUESTION AND TECHNICAL RESPONSE

QUESTION 1

Can you clarify what kind of information you need to see to meet this requirement? The documentation of furnace setup and calibration curve with regards to performing the MIL-STD-3020 fire exposure.

TECHNICAL RESPONSE 1

The requirements of the furnace exposure are stated in MIL-STD-3020 FIRE RESISTANCE OF U.S. NAVAL SURFACE SHIPS Appendix A METHOD OF FIRE TESTS FOR FIRE RESISTANCE OF BULKHEADS AND DECKS (OVERHEADS). The contracted laboratory shall be able to produce a calibration curve of the furnace exposure as stated in MIL-STD-3020 Appendix A, Section A.4 within a furnace with dimensions capable of testing the stated test specimen. Specifically:

“A.4 SUMMARY OF TEST METHODS

A standard fire exposure of controlled extent and severity is specified. The intent is to provide an average total heat flux of 204±16 kilowatts per square meter (kW/m2 ) (65,000±5,000 Btu per square foot/hour (Btu/ft2 -h)) for the duration of the test. The test setup shall provide a minimum average total heat flux of 188 kilowatts per square meter (kW/m2 ) (60,000 Btu per square foot/hour (Btu/ft2 -h)) within the first 5 minutes of the test exposure. At all times after 5 min, the average temperature within the furnace shall be maintained at a minimum of 1038 °C (1900 °F) and a maximum of 1149 °C (2100 °F) for the duration of the test as shown in figure A-1. A calibration of the furnace shall be performed to characterize the furnace’s heat flux versus temperature profile.”
