About this file
This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document for federal contract opportunity AOI N0016426SCA007 regarding the Family of Adaptive Modular Gun (FAMG) system.
The document addresses seven key clarifications on FAMG requirements and testing procedures. Regarding primary attributes, bipod and carry handle must be included in the maximum weight requirement of 11.5 lbs (goal weight 10 lbs), while sights and accessories are excluded. For firing modes, Safe/Automatic is preferred, though Safe/Automatic/Semi-Automatic is acceptable. Testing will use a combination of both M855 and M855A1 ammunition. Durability and reliability testing will employ 200-round belts fired in 6-8 round bursts with 3-second pauses and barrel cooling cycles every 200 rounds, with cleaning intervals at 2,000 rounds (wipe and lubricate without disassembly) and complete disassembly, inspection, and NDT at 4,000 rounds. For secondary attributes, dispersion testing requires weapons to be fired from a hard mount, with Average Extreme Spread calculated from six groups of five shots (or five-round bursts), then averaged across all groups. Thresholds represent minimum requirements, distinct from secondary attribute targets. The government will conduct two blocked/obstructed barrel tests: muzzle obstruction involving 50mm of heavy grease packed into the muzzle, and bullet obstruction with a dummy bullet placed just forward of the chamber, both followed by inspection for damage and overpressure evidence.

AOI N0016426SCA007 FAMG Q and As
1. Section Primary Attributes (KPP): The weight requirement states, "Sights and other accessories will not be included in the weight requirement." If the bipod and carry handle are operator removable, can the weight requirement exclude those items?
Yes, bipod and carry handle shall be included with the weight per following KPP “The FAMG maximum weight with standard rail interface, carry handle, bipod attached, buttstock, and barrel shall be less than or equal to 11.5 lbs with a goal weight of 10 lbs.
Sights and other accessories will not be included in the weight requirement.”
2. Section Primary Attributes (KPP): Regarding fire selection modes, if a system currently has Safe/Automatic/Semi-Automatic, would the USG prefer that the system be changed to exclude Semi-Automatic to only have Safe/Automatic?
Per the KPP, Safe/Auto is preferred and Safe/Auto/Semi-Auto is acceptable. “The FAMG safety selector shall have firing mode of Safe/Automatic preferred, or Safe/Automatic/Semi-Automatic is acceptable.
3. For completion of TOP 03-02-045 testing, please specify whether M855 or M855A1 will be used?
A combination of both M855 and M855A1 shall be used.
4. For completion of TOP 03-02-045 durability/reliability testing, what is the firing rate and cleaning schedule that will be used?
200 round belts fired in 6-8 round bursts with 3s pauses with a barrel cooling cycle every 200 rounds.
Cleaning schedule: Use a standard schedule of cleaning and re-lubrication, without disassembly (wipe and lubricate), at 2,000 rounds followed by a complete disassembly, inspection, cleaning and lubrication and NDT at 4,000 rounds.
5. Section Secondary Attributes (KSA): Would the Government please clarify how Average Extreme Spread will be calculated for the dispersion attributes?
Weapon shall be fired from a hard mount.
Single Shot: 6 groups of 5 single-shots per group (total of 30 rounds). Extreme Spread from each group will be determined, then averaged across all 6 groups for the Average Extreme Spread.
Burst: 6 groups of a 5-round burst (total of 30 rounds). Extreme Spread from each group will be determined, then averaged across all 6 groups for the Average Extreme Spread.
6. Many of the Secondary attributes also have a Threshold requirement identified. Could the intent be explained for attributes that have both a Secondary attribute and a Threshold designation?
Thresholds are the minimum requirement.
7. Would the Government please specify which blocked/obstructed barrel test(s) they intend to use in testing? There are multiple tests and multiple locations along the length of the barrel to obstruct it.
Muzzle Obstruction
(1) This test simulates the blockage of a barrel resulting from inadvertently thrusting the muzzle into mud, slush, etc.
(2) Pack heavy grease (such as the type described in Military Performance Specification (MIL-PRF)-23827C19) into the muzzle of the weapon to a depth of 50 mm (2-in.). Check the depth by inserting a marked probe or cleaning rod into the breach of the barrel and adjust accordingly. It may be necessary to remove and replace the flash suppressor to facilitate the procedure.
(3) Place the weapon in the mount, load a single round of ammunition, and fire the weapon remotely.
(4) Inspect the weapon for external and internal damage, this may require complete disassembly.
(5) Inspect the witness screens and record the location and size of any fragment impacts or holes.
(6) Inspect the fired cartridge case for evidence of overpressure, blown primer, rupture, etc.
Bullet Obstruction
(1) Perform this test in the same manner as the muzzle obstruction test except that the obstruction is a bullet just forward of the chamber.
(2) Place a bullet, of the same type as used by the cartridge being fired, into the weapon chamber. Force the bullet forward so that its base will just touch the tip of the bullet of a live cartridge after the breech has been locked. Load the live round and fire the weapon.
