About this file

This document provides details of an industry day announcement for the Next Generation Logistics Ship program. The Navy seeks information from shipyards, vessel designers and builders, and equipment suppliers regarding commercial vessel designs that can be modified for conducting logistics missions including replenishment at sea, cargo delivery, and fuel transfer. The Navy intends to acquire these ships through conversions of existing vessels and new construction. The industry day will include a program brief on mission requirements, schedules, and planned solicitations. Questions submitted by attendees will be answered in a subsequent session. Interested parties must register by June 15th to receive teleconference access for the June 25th industry day.

NGLS

MISSION OVERVIEW

• Mission: This capability enables refueling, rearming, and resupply of Naval assets – afloat and ashore – in support of Distributed Maritime Operations

(DMO), Littoral Operations Contested Environment (LOCE), and Expeditionary

Advanced Base Operations (EABO).

• Description: Augmenting the traditional Combat Logistics Force (CLF), the

Next Generation Logistics Ships are envisioned to be smaller and less vulnerable while operating near contested environments, sustaining afloat (Surface Action

Group) and ashore (Expeditionary Advanced Base) requirements.

• Employment: Augmenting the traditional CLF with NGLSs introduces new combat credible maritime force capabilities to ensure warfighters remain in the fight supporting USN/USMC Integrated Warfighting Concept of Operations.

• Operation: NGLS will be operated by the Military Sealift Command. Manning is expected to be Civilian Mariners.

• Current ships in the Combat Logistics Force consist primarily of Fleet

Oilers (T-AOs) and Dry Cargo/Ammunition Ships (T-AKEs), with a smaller number of Fast Combat Support Ships (T-AOEs)

• The NGLS is envisioned to be smaller than existing ships in the Combat

Logistics Force

T-AO 205 Class Characteristics T-AKE-1 Class Characteristics

Length: 227 m Length: 210 m

Beam: 32 m Beam: 32 m

PLATFORMS &

REQUIREMENTS

• Potential Platforms: Minimally-modified commercially designed support vessels meeting Naval combat logistics requirements. Potentially a family of vessels (Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) and/or Fast Supply Vessel (FSV)) with commercial designs tailored for military applications.

• Commercial PSVs and/or FSVs are potential solutions, but the Navy is not limiting the solution to these types of vessels

• Initial set of Top Level Requirements have been developed for a PSV Variant and an FSV Variant

• Navy is seeking feedback on feasibility of existing commercial ships and ship designs to meet these requirements

• Speed and arrangement of replenishment stations are potential challenges with existing PSV designs

• Final requirements will be set after industry engagement and internal Navy studies
