Statement of Work and Specifications for Multi‐Channel Water Quality Monitoring Sondes and Solar‐ powered Buoys with Telemetry Systems

Statement of work:

Background and objectives: The USDA ARS National Cold‐Water Marine Aquaculture Center’s Shellfish

Genetics Lab (Kingston, RI) is developing an oyster genetic improvement program to serve the Northeast region (ME to NY). As such, will be investigating the field performance of different genetic lines at five field sites (ME (1), RI (2), CT (1), NY (1)) with varying environmental conditions. To determine the best performing line(s) for culture at each site and throughout the region, it is important to correlate performance with environmental factors. Therefore, continuous water quality data will be collected using multi‐channel water quality sondes to generate profiles of the growing environment at different culture sites. Specifically, the sondes will measure temperature, salinity (by way of conductivity), dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll. Because the sondes will be deployed at each field site for the long term and collect copious amounts of data, they will be tethered to a buoy that provides connectivity to a telemetry system (for data access/storage on the cloud) and solar charging capabilities (to reduce the hands‐on maintenance requirements, interruptions in data collection during periods the sondes are removed for battery replacement, and the long‐term cost of replacement batteries).

Rational for requirement: To establish a long‐term Eastern oyster genetic improvement program for the

Northeast region, our research objectives have expanded to include genetic surveys of wild and cultured populations for throughout the region and large‐scale field performance trials of these populations at diverse, but representative, grow‐out sites. To characterize the distinct growing environments, we need specialized equipment to efficiently gather copious amounts of accurate environmental data. Our lab does not have any kind of environmental data loggers currently. These sondes are critical to meet the needs of our expanding and evolving research program. Additionally, Sondes equipped with a cloud‐ based telemetry system to store, easily retrieve, and view large data sets in real‐time will further support our mission.
