About this file
This is a Minimum Requirements Document for a Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detection (SNSPD) System, dated 13 April 2026.
The requiring activity seeks a complete, fully integrated SNSPD system to support advanced research in defense applications including ladar, laser communications, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, and remote sensing. The system must provide single-photon detection capability across visible and near-infrared wavelengths (approximately 700 nm to 2100 nm) with photon detection efficiency of at least 80% for near-infrared wavelengths and 60% for extended infrared wavelengths up to 2000 nm or greater. Timing resolution must not exceed 100 picoseconds full width at half maximum (preferred), recovery time must be 300 nanoseconds or less to 50% efficiency depending on wavelength, and dark count rates should not exceed 1,000 counts per second (preferred, wavelength-dependent).
The system must include multiple detection channels with fiber-coupled inputs using standard optical fiber interfaces (FC/PC connectors or equivalent), graded-index optical fiber coupling, and all required readout electronics. A closed-cycle cryocooling system capable of maintaining superconducting operating temperatures must be air-cooled or equivalent and suitable for laboratory environments with integrated temperature control and automated operation. The complete system must be fully integrated and operational upon installation, include control software for monitoring and adjusting performance, support data acquisition and laboratory equipment compatibility, and function as a calibration reference for other photodetectors. All necessary cables, connectors, helium lines, drive cables, vacuum components, and consumables must be included or identified. The system must comply with applicable federal safety standards and laboratory equipment requirements and include documentation for safe operation and maintenance.

Minimum Requirements Document
Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detection (SNSPD) System
13 April 2026
Background & Scope: The requiring activity is conducting advanced research in support of defense mission applications involving ladar (laser detection and ranging), laser communications
(lasercom), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and remote sensing systems.
These efforts require the ability to detect and characterize extremely low levels of light, including single-photon events, across visible and near-infrared wavelengths.
Current detector technologies used within the organization are limited in sensitivity, timing resolution, and noise performance, which restricts the ability to fully evaluate emerging photonic technologies and optimize system performance. Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) represent a significant advancement in photon detection capability, offering high detection efficiency, low dark count rates, and precise timing resolution.
Requirements/Salient Characteristics: This acquisition will provide a complete SNSPD system capable of supporting experimental research, detector characterization, calibration activities, and system integration efforts. The system will enable evaluation of next-generation detector technologies and support mission-critical applications including laser rangefinding, optical communications, and advanced sensing. The following minimum requirements must be met:
1.) Detection Capability:
• Must provide single-photon detection capability across visible and near-infrared wavelength bands (approximately 700 nm to 2100 nm).
• Must support high detection efficiency across multiple wavelength ranges relevant to ladar and lasercom applications.
• Must enable operation suitable for both discrete detector measurements and experimental system integration.
2.) Performance Characteristics:
• Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE):
o ≥ 80% for near-infrared wavelengths o ≥ 60% for extended infrared wavelengths (up to ~2000 nm or greater)
• Timing Resolution:
o ≤ 100 picoseconds full width at half maximum (FWHM) preferred
• Recovery Time:
o ≤ 300 nanoseconds to 50% efficiency depending on wavelength
• Dark Count Rate:
o Low dark count rates appropriate for single-photon detection applications (≤
1,000 counts per second preferred, depending on wavelength)
3.) System Configuration:
• Must include multiple detection channels capable of supporting different wavelength ranges.
• Must include fiber-coupled inputs compatible with standard optical fiber interfaces (e.g., FC/PC connectors or equivalent).
• Must support graded-index or equivalent optical fiber coupling for efficient photon delivery.
• Must include all required readout electronics (DC and RF) for detector operation.
4.) Cryogenic Cooling System:
• Must include a closed-cycle cryocooling system capable of maintaining required superconducting operating temperatures.
• Must be air-cooled or equivalent and suitable for laboratory environments.
• Must include integrated temperature control and automated operation (e.g., push-button startup/shutdown).
• Must include all required components such as compressor, cold head, vacuum pump, and interconnect lines.
5.) System Integration & Usability:
• Must provide a fully integrated system capable of immediate operation upon installation.
• Must include control software or interface for monitoring and adjusting system performance.
• Must support data acquisition and compatibility with laboratory test equipment.
6.) Calibration & Experimental Support:
• Must support use as a calibration reference for other photodetectors.
• Must enable characterization of detector performance, including efficiency, timing jitter, and noise effects.
