About this file
Model 326/346 Type 3 Fire Engine Specification
This document is a detailed specification for Type 3 fire engines (Models 326 and 346) issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program. The specification was issued in March 2023, superseding the October 2022 version.
The specification establishes comprehensive requirements for two-wheel drive (Model 326) and four-wheel drive (Model 346) fire engines with 600 gallons of usable water capacity. Key chassis specifications include a Cummins L9 diesel engine (330 horsepower, 1000 lb-ft torque), Allison automatic transmission, maximum height of 125 inches including exhaust and light bar, and gross vehicle weight ratings of 33,000 pounds (Model 326) and 37,000 pounds (Model 346). The apparatus body must be modular, transferable to new chassis without cutting or welding, and constructed from materials consistent with fire vehicle industry standards. The water tank comprises 600 usable gallons in polypropylene construction with internal swash partitions, plus an integral 25-gallon Class A foam concentrate tank. The fire pump is specified as a Darley Model HSP 250 GPM single-stage PTO-driven centrifugal pump capable of delivering 200 GPM at 300 psi from a 5-foot lift through suction hose. Electrical systems include LED traffic warning lights, scene lights, compartment lighting, a rear-view backup camera, and a multiplexed electrical management system. The apparatus must comply with NFPA 1900 standards and includes comprehensive compartmentation for equipment storage, a two-piece hose bed with aluminum covers, a booster hose reel, foam proportioning system, and emergency warning systems. Warranty provisions include 15-year coverage on materials and workmanship (excluding component trade accessories subject to separate manufacturer warranties) and lifetime warranty on the polypropylene water tank covering defective materials and workmanship.
