About this file
This is a Minimum Requirements Document for a federal procurement by the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM).
USAFSAM's Food Operational Response and Technology (FORT) laboratory, an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited facility, requires one (1) bioMérieux GENE-UP Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) System to replace its aging Applied Biosystems 7500 Real-Time PCR instruments, which are operating beyond their scheduled lifecycles and subject to manufacturer end-of-life support sunsetting in 2027. The laboratory's primary mission is detecting pathogens in food samples during foodborne illness outbreak investigations. The replacement system must provide comparable PCR-based analytical capabilities, workflows, and technologies to maintain the laboratory's accredited scope of testing and prevent critical lapse in outbreak response capabilities.
The firm requirements for the GENE-UP system include: (1) inclusion of a 5-year service package; (2) availability of A2LA/AOC/PTM validated assays for food testing, with primary targets being Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., shiga toxin Escherichia coli spp., and norovirus assays; and (3) PCR-based technology platform. The document date is 7 July 2026, indicating the procurement must advance the full validation and external auditing process well in advance of the 2027 sunset date to maintain operational and accreditation continuity.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT
Title: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) System – bioMérieux GENE-UP
Document Date: 7 July 2026
Background:
The United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) Food Operational Response and
Technology (FORT) laboratory is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited facility. The laboratory's primary mission is to detect pathogens in food samples during foodborne illness outbreak investigations utilizing Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR)-based assays.
Currently, the FORT laboratory relies on the Applied Biosystems (ABI) 7500 Real-Time PCR system to execute this mission. However, the existing instruments are operating well beyond their scheduled lifecycles. Furthermore, the manufacturer has issued an official end-of-life (EOL) notice, with all system support sunsetting in 2027.
To prevent a critical lapse in outbreak response capabilities and to maintain ISO 17025 accreditation, the
FORT laboratory must procure, fully validate, and undergo external auditing for a replacement testing platform well in advance of the 2027 sunset date.
Scope:
The vendor shall provide one (1) Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) System - bioMerieux’s GENE-UP.
The system shall be a pathogen detection system that provides comparable PCR-based analytical capabilities, workflows, and technologies required to meet the laboratory's accredited scope of testing.
Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
The following Salient Characteristics are firm requirements and meet these characteristics:
1. bioMerieux’s GENE-UP to include 5-year service package
2. Variety of A2LA/AOC/PTM validated assays for food testing: Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., shiga toxin Escherichia coli spp., and norovirus assays are primary targets
3. PCR based
