3.7.1 Cutting. Cut coats in strict accordance with the patterns furnished by the Government. All materials shall be cut in the direction indicated by the directional lines on the patterns. Cut all polyester/wool parts of the coat from the same lot of basic material, except the armhole shields may be cut from ends. When armhole shields are cut from ends, the shields should match each other. The lining fronts, lining side backs, and center back lining parts of the coat and facing for inside pocket shall be cut from the same lot of lining material. All other lining parts may be cut from ends. When pairs of sleeve linings are cut from ends, the shade of the lining parts shall match each other. The bias binding shall be cut 5/8 to 7/8 inch wide. Cut fusible interlining stays for the armhole, back neckline, and shoulder seams on the bias, 3/4 inch wide, 4 ±1/4 inches long. Cut the interlining cloth for collar on the bias in accordance with the pattern furnished. The use of drill holes is prohibited.

3.7.2 Stitches, seams, and stitching. The stitch and seam types specified in table IX shall conform to

ASTM D6193. The number of stitches per inch as specified in table IX indicates the minimum and maximum number permitted. All overedge stitching shall be done on serging machines with a knife attachment properly set to trim the raveled edge without cutting the material. All stitching shall be uniformly gauged throughout the coat.

Thread tension shall be maintained so there is no tight or loose stitching. All seams shall start and finish evenly.

When more than one stitch type is specified for an operation, any of them may be used.
