About this file
This document is a technical specification for a Micro-profiling System required by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The system must precisely measure very low concentrations of oxygen, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), pH, and redox potential in marine sediments without disturbing the depositional layers. Key requirements include:
- Microsensors and microelectrodes with 10 microns or less diameter working surface and 10 mm or less glass shaft diameter
- Detection limits of 0.3 μM for oxygen and H2S, 0.1 mV for redox potential, and 0.01 pH units
- Motorized stage with 100 μm precision on x/y axes and 10 μm precision on z-axis (depth up to 10 m)
This is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the USGS Office of Acquisitions and Grants, seeking responses from vendors capable of providing the specified Micro-profiling System. Respondents must submit capability statements by August 12, 2024, 5:00 PM Eastern. The government will use the responses to determine if a competitive procurement is warranted, but no contract will be awarded as a result of this RFI.

Micro-profiling System Technical Specifications
The Micro-profiling System, its microsensors, and microelectrodes must:
• precisely measure very low concentrations of oxygen, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), pH, and redox potential in marine sediments, particularly throughout a column of sediments without disturbing the depositional layers of the sediment,
• precisely measure chemical changes on the submillimeter scale in a column of sediment that vary spatially in the x and y planes but especially in the z (depth) plane to inform the relationship between geochemical properties with microbes, small animals, and minerals.
• include a motorized stage that offers precision of the z-axis (depth) down to 10 µm, while on the x- and y-axes the sensor position can be manipulated with 100 µm precision.
The Micro-profiling system must have the following salient characteristics:
Oxygen sensor
• Diameter of working surface: 10 microns or less
• Diameter of glass shaft: 10 mm or less
• Detection limit: less than or equal to 0.3 µM
Hydrogen sulfide sensor
• Diameter of working surface: 10 microns or less
• Diameter of glass shaft: 10 mm or less
• Detection limit: less than or equal to 0.3 µM
Redox potential sensor
• Diameter of working surface: 10 microns or less
• Diameter of glass shaft: 10 mm or less
• Detection limit: less than or equal to 0.1 mV pH sensor
• Diameter of working surface: 10 microns or less
• Diameter of glass shaft: 10 mm or less
• Detection limit: less than or equal to 0.01 units
Micromanipulator stage
• X and y axes precision: 100 microns or less
• Z axis precision 10 microns or less
