About this file
This is a Material Ordering Data sheet for MIL-S-23284A, which specifies requirements for steel forgings used in shafts, sleeves, propeller nuts, couplings, and stocks for rudders and diving planes. The document details Class 2 Nickel-molybdenum steel requirements with IDN N4523A 4292-1290.
The specifications call for a rough machined forging with dimensions of 28-1/4" outside diameter x 14-1/4" inside diameter x 12-1/2" thick, with a tolerance of +/- 1/32". Key requirements include: nickel content maximum of 3.5%, mandatory Brinell hardness testing, impact properties per Table III, no repair welding permitted, and both Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT) and Ultrasonic Inspection (UT) in accordance with T9074-AS-GIB-010/271. The material requires Level A preservation for marine environment with Grade 4 preservation per MIL-PRF-16173, and commercial packing with containers marked according to MIL-STD-129.
