About this file

This is a technical specifications document for magnet power supplies required under Solicitation Number 381283NN issued by the Department of Energy Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The document outlines detailed operating and rated parameters for five distinct power supply units: a Focusing Solenoid (0-37 A / 1.8 V operating, 50 A / 5 V rated), a Collector (de-focusing) Solenoid (0-152 A / 9 V operating, 300 A / 20 V rated), a 90-Degree Bending Dipole (0-31.5 A / 1.3 V operating, 50 A / 5 V rated), and two identical Steering Magnets (6.25 A / 0.3 V operating, 15 A / 1.5 V rated). All five units must meet uniform performance standards including 0.1% current ripple and repeatability, 0.005 A current resolution, 0.2% long-term current stability over 24 hours, and 85% efficiency.

The power supplies must operate under single-phase 480 VAC / 60 Hz AC three-phase input power with allowable voltage fluctuation of ±10%. Bidders must provide quotes for the exact items and specifications listed and demonstrate the capability to meet all stated requirements. Delivery is required at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois. This solicitation seeks competitive quotes for commercial power supply equipment that meets the specified technical parameters for accelerator magnet systems.

2. Operating Conditions

- Input Power: Single-phase 480 VAC / 60 Hz AC 3-phase supply. Voltage fluctuation ≤ ±10%.

- Cooling: For power supplies <1 kW: forced-air cooling. For over 1 kW, water cooling is preferred.

- Ambient Temperature: -10 ℃ to +40 ℃. Under stable operation, fluctuation ≤ ±2 ℃.

- Relative Humidity: 20% ≤ RH ≤ 80%.

- Continuous Operation: Long-term, stable, continuous operation.

3. Design Requirements The power supply shall be a high-precision, low-ripple, bidirectional constant-current supply with long-term reliable operation. The design must strike a balance between output current performance and power factor, as well as other grid characteristics. It must incorporate EMC pre-compliance design, ensuring EMC compatibility through both circuit principles and manufacturing process design.

The power supply shall adopt a modular structure, with the following main circuit topology:

- AC–DC source

- DC–DC converter

- Hardware protection and interlock

- Coil temperature protection

- Load parameter sampling

- EMI filter

- High-precision digital power controller

3.1 DC Source

- Industrial-grade DC source with PFC to ensure power factor compliance.

- Bus support capacitors must handle the voltage rise due to load energy feedback after a sudden shutdown at full load.

3.2 DC–DC Power Converter

a) Use reliable topologies for power conversion and drive circuits.

b) Design power rating must provide ≥ 2× margin relative to rated output.

c) Components and layout must minimize signal crossings, wiring length, and account for heat dissipation.

3.3 Hardware Protection and Interlock

- Hardware protection primary, software secondary.

- Internal interlocks: overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature.

- External interlocks: 2 inputs, 2 outputs, dry contacts, latching required.

3.4 Load Sampling

Independent load current sampling loop feeding controller, cross-checked with closed-loop current.

3.5 EMI Filtering

Necessary EMI filters based on requirements and layout.

3.6 Internal Layout

- Modular layout with emphasis on heat dissipation and maintenance convenience.

- Fans (if used) must be high-reliability, easy to replace.

- Temperature rise ≤ 10 ℃ above ambient after steady state.

3.7 Power Supply Enclosure

- Standard 19-inch rackmount chassis, ≤ 3U height.

- Robust, aesthetically clean design.

- Input/output terminals rear-mounted, properly labeled.

3.8 Control and Regulation Requirements

Ethernet Control: The power supply shall include a built-in Ethernet interface supporting TCP/IP communication. The interface must allow:

- Remote configuration of output current/voltage setpoints.

- Upload and execution of current ramping profiles.

- Real-time monitoring of output current, voltage, power, and status signals.

- Remote reporting of interlock and fault conditions, with capability for remote reset (subject to safety constraints).

Digital Self-Regulation: The power supply shall employ a fully digital, closed-loop control system with high-precision current feedback (e.g., DCCT or equivalent). The regulation system must:

- Maintain output accuracy, repeatability, resolution, and stability in compliance with specifications listed in Section 1.

- Compensate automatically for variations in input mains, load impedance, and environmental conditions.

- Operate continuously without requiring manual recalibration during long-term use.

- Provide an independent cross-check of load current through an auxiliary sampling channel for enhanced reliability.

4. Electrical Acceptance Tests Tests at 480 V / 60 Hz three-phase input include:

- Long-term stability

- 8-hour current stability

- Output voltage ripple

- Output current resolution

- Output current repeatability

- Fault protection verification

- Power cycling under full load

- EMC/EMI (optional)

4.1 Fault Protection

Verify interlocks/fault signals trigger immediate protection, with latching and reset required.

4.2 Power Cycling at Full Load

Perform 3 consecutive full-load shutdown/startup cycles. Must return to normal operation.

4.3 Other

EMC/EMI tests as required. Can be waived if unnecessary.
