Brand Name Specific Items Required
4. Specific characteristics of the components that limit the availability to specific brand names.
a. General
The Marine Corps Rifle Team uses rifles built to obtain maximum long-range competition accuracy. The rifle team assembles match ammunition with specific brands and types of smokeless powder, bullets and primers. Substitutions change point of impact and grouping results, negatively affecting the accuracy levels required for competition. Variations between manufacturers can cause point of impact changes sufficient to result in a hit or miss, or change the competition results
b. Rifle Primers
The rifle team has determined which manufacturer’s primers yield the best accuracy with a given cartridge case and powder. Primer characteristics having a bearing on safe chamber pressure, velocity and accuracy are unique to the listed manufacturers and model number. Like the powder, these primers possess unique characteristics in the area of temperature stability and sensitivity (meaning the required impact force from the firing pin to initiate the primers
c. Smokeless Powder
Smokeless powder characteristics are unique to each manufacturer. The powders listed in the table above have burn rates and load densities that are not duplicated by other manufactures. The rifle team determined which powder provides the best performance in specific cartridges and custom-built rifles. In addition, the rifle team has determined that the listed powders are the most stable in varying temperatures and humidity levels.
