Pantograph Description
MCAS Iwakuni is constructing a MILCON Project P-945 Type III Hydrant Fuel System to support wide-body AMC and transient aircraft.
The Type III Hydrants System consists of 5 hydrant outlet pits (aircraft refueling spots)
It’s essential that we procure 4 pantograph fueling arms and 2 high reach refueling platforms to provide us with the key equipment to link our $33M Type III Hydrant Fuel
System to the aircraft the system was designed to support.
The design plan for the Type III hydrant fueling system included the use of the wide-range pantographs and supplemental high reach refueling platforms. See attached project design plans for the wide-range pantographs and high reach refueling platforms.
The following descriptions provide the required specifications for the wide-range pantographs and the high reach refueling platforms necessary to support the P-945 Type III
Hydrant Fuel System:
Wide-range pantograph:
Length: 50 feet ( in 3 main sections )
Pipe material: Stainless steel
Must have a rigid type low profile dispensing end to allow for horizontal refueling of wide body aircraft
Pipe Arms should include Swivel, Elbows, Flanges and Spring Balancing Assembly.
Minimum rating at 125 psi to support 600 gallons per minute fuel flow
Pantograph pipe diameter must be 4” at the Hydrant Coupler inlet with a 3” reducer placed at the dispensing end.
It must be towable, moveable and be able to be coupled to fuel hydrant pits.
Must have Interlock systems that secure the pantograph sections in a safe and locked position when unit is transported
Main Components:
4” Hydrant Coupler with pressure control and deadman control functions.
- Deadman
- Grouding reel (spring loaded)
- 4” Control Valve
- Pressure guage
- Sampling connection
- Venturi
- Flow Meter
- Thermal relief system: Equalizing reservoir (expansion tank)
- Dispensing End: 4X3 inch reducing elbow
- Dispensing End: drybreak quick disconnect
- Dispensing End: Singlepoint refueling nozzle (with 100 mesh strainer)
- Towbar for pintle hook towing of pantograph
Must include Operation, Maintenance and Installation Instructions
High Reach Refueling platform:
Designed to support underwing refueling of wide body aircraft
Towable and movable stainless steel scissor lift platform designed to be coupled to wide-range pantographs
Pipe diameter must be 3” stainless steel
Piping must have a thermal relief system (expansion tank).
Piping must also include sampling connection.
Pipe Arms should include Swivel, Elbows, Flanges and Spring Balancing Assembly.
Grounding reel (spring loaded)
Pressure rating of 125 psi minimum to support 600 gallon per minute fuel flow
Dispensing End must have a drybreak quick disconnect Dispensing End must have a single point refueling nozzle Scissor lift platform must be able reach height of 18 feet to support underwing refueling
Scissor lift must have a manually operated lifting device.
Platform must be aluminum and scissor must be steel coated; and have an access ladder, railing with an automatic closing door
Platform must have Single point receptacle at inlet in order to be coupled with wide range pantograph single point nozzle with a 100 mesh strainer.
Towable platform’s tow bar must support pintle hook towing
Must include Operation, Maintenance and Installation Instructions.

4.2 Aircraft Direct Fueling Systems
Aircraft direct fueling systems are fuel systems that deliver fuel directly into an aircraft and require additional fueling hardware, such as a hydrant hose truck, pantograph, or hydrant hose cart. These may be Type III hydrant systems (DoD Standard Design AW 78-24-28) for portable pantographs or hydrant servicing trucks/carts; or may be hard piped with fixed pantographs, which is usually the case for Type V in-shelter fueling (DoD Standard Design AW 78-24-29) and Type IV hot fueling stations (DoD Standard Design AW 78-24-29).
