Parts Definitions Common Parts – Also known as “Aftermarket” parts. These are parts which are new and obtainable from sources other than the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). These are parts that:

1) are produced by more than one manufacturer and are generally available through the general, non-specialized auto parts trade,

2) are available from more than one source of supply in the general commercial replacement parts system,

3) have application on more than one make of vehicle or major sub-assembly;

For example - if a particular part for an International Harvester vehicle can only be obtained from International Harvester or their dealers, the part is OEM.

However, if the part, or a substitute part, can be obtained also from other manufacturers or dealers, the part is common regardless of where it is obtained.

For example - a seal for a Ford pickup truck which can be obtained from the Ford parts distribution system and other sources such as NAPA, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Kragen Auto Parts, Pep Boys is considered “common”; even though the box it comes in may be marked “For Ford F-150.”

This definition includes new and rebuilt parts such as ignition components, electrical system components, seals, bearings, exhaust system hoses, etc., that are available in the normal across-the counter trade.

It does not include parts with specialized application such as parts peculiar to fire engines, emergency equipment, refuse handling equipment, or similar equipment.

The “aftermarket” is a secondary market of the mobile equipment industry, concerned with the manufacturing, remanufacturing, distribution, retailing, and installation of parts, chemicals, tools, equipment and accessories for light, medium and heavy duty vehicles and other equipment, after the sale of the end items by the OEM.

The aftermarket encompasses parts for replacement, collision, appearance, and performance. The aftermarket provides a wide variety of common parts of varying qualities and prices for many vehicle makes and models on the road.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) - A manufacturer that assembles complete vehicles and off-road equipment, either commercial or military, whether assembled from parts of its own manufacture or from parts or components furnished by other manufacturers or a combination of both.

An OEM part is a part which may only be obtained from an original equipment manufacturer, either the assembly plant or a network of dealers.

Rebuilt – Parts/Components which have been dismantled and reconstructed as necessary; all internal and external parts cleaned and made free from rust and corrosion; all impaired, defective or substantially worn parts restored to sound condition or replaced with new, rebuilt, or unimpaired used parts; all missing parts replaced with new, rebuilt or unimpaired used parts and such other operations performed as are necessary to put the product in sound working condition. Rebuilt or used parts must conform to the OEM specifications.

Batteries – A rechargeable electrical component that stores and supplies electrical energy for engine starting and operating accessories. Battery size and type are usually based on the size, type and application of the vehicle/equipment. Multiple batteries can be connected in series and parallel circuits to achieve that appropriate voltage and amperage required by the vehicle/equipment.

Non-Price List (NPL) Parts – Vehicle and equipment parts for which price lists are not available. Price lists are developed by manufacturers, distributors, and retailers as a recommendation price for selling products that they offer for sale. NPL parts are usually obtained from sources outside of a vendor’s normal distribution and supply system.
