About this file

This document provides details on a federal grant opportunity from the United States Department of Agriculture to support the use of traditional indigenous foods in child nutrition programs. Up to four cooperative agreements totaling $2 million will be awarded to organizations led by members of federally recognized tribes or Native Hawaiians to provide tailored training and technical assistance to school food authorities serving tribal communities. Funding can support inclusion of indigenous foods in the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Summer Food Service Program, Special Milk Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program. Selected organizations will develop culturally appropriate nutrition education materials and train school nutrition professionals on serving indigenous foods and providing corresponding nutrition education to students. The goal is to increase understanding of barriers faced by tribal schools, build capacity to incorporate indigenous foods, establish supply relationships, and engage communities in child nutrition programs.
