1. Notify all cognizant personnel before maintenance starts.

2. Notify ships force that testing of fire suppression system pressure switches for automatic shutdown of main engines, ships generators, intake blowers, and activation of red warning strobe will be performed.

3. Ensure back-up fire fighting capabilities are available and fire watch is established while FM-200 system is disabled.

4. Perform FM-200 system pressure check, (Comply with MPC R-M-10254).

5. Inspect FM-200 system, (Comply with MPC R-S-10258).

6. Close all the engine room doors, engine room emergency escape hatches, intake dampers, and natural exhaust vent covers.

7. Install FM-200 warning signs on all accesses to all FM-200 hazard spaces, (Refer to Figure 1).

8. Establish safety precautions.

a. Assemble rescue team.

(1) Assign minimum of two rescue personnel with at least one rescuer per two maintenance person-nel.

(2) Provide communications from one rescue person to manned watch station such as quarterdeck or bridge.

(3) Provide SCBA, P/N: 10102292, to each assigned rescue personnel.

(4) Verify that CPR-qualified personnel are readily available.

b. Conduct safety briefing for all involved personnel.

(1) Discuss hazards involved.

(a) How FM-200 system could accidentally be discharged.

(b) Where FM-200 might migrate after discharge (visualize the dispersion of FM-200 as if it were water).

(2) Discuss the actions to be taken by maintenance, rescue, and other affected personnel should accidental discharge occur.

(3) Define escape paths from work area to well ventilated safe haven which is not susceptible to significant FM-200 gas.

(a) Ensure that appropriate entries are made in the damage control closure log.

(b) Block open inward-swinging doors in escape route by a positive means such as a C-clamp rigidly attached to door or door frame.

(c) Ensure escape paths are free of obstructions.

(4) Discuss which access openings in the escape route should remain open throughout the procedure and how they should be secured.

(5) Review SCBA operating procedures including buddy system.

(6) Conduct walk-through of escape path to safe haven.

c. Post warning signs or guards at accesses to cylinder work area, protected spaces, and areas where FM-200 could migrate after discharge to ensure non-maintenance personnel stay clear.

d. Warn that FM-200 system maintenance is being performed and that access is restricted.

e. Evacuate all personnel not involved in FM-200 systemmaintenance from work area, protected space, and areas where significant amounts of FM-200 could migrate after discharge.

f. Position assigned rescue personnel to perform the following:

(1) Monitor conditions in the area of FM-200 system while avoiding the likely path of heavy FM-200 migration in the event of FM-200 discharge.

(2) Maintain a count of maintenance personnel working on FM-200 system.

g. Conduct communications check with continually manned watch station, (i.e., bridge or quarterdeck).

9. Complete Equipment Lockout/Tags-Plus Process IAW COMDTINST 9077.1 (series).

10. Attach Red Danger Tags to all actuation stations.
