OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND

The upgraded ALS (ALS-U) is designed to be unsurpassed by any currently envisioned technology and will enable world leading soft x-ray science for years to come. In June 2016, DOE’s Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (BESAC) released the recommendations of the BES Facility Upgrade Prioritization Subcommittee, whose report deemed the ALS-U project “absolutely central” to contribute to world leading science and “ready to initiate construction”—the highest possible ratings in the prioritization process. In September 2016 DOE initiated the ALS-U project by approving its “mission need” and assigning it critical decision CD-0, the first milestone in making ALS-U a reality. In September 2018 DOE approved the critical decision CD-1 which establishes the conceptual design and the cost range of the project. In December 2019, critical decision CD-3a approval authorizes to start the construction of the accumulator ring. The project team is currently working towards completing of the preliminary design phase by the end of 2020.

The ALS-U project includes a package of new and upgraded insertion device beamlines that are intended to leverage the enormous gains in coherent brightness provided by the new source. The package consists of two new beamlines, and upgrades to two existing beamlines:

• Flexon, a soft X-ray beamline covering an energy range of 400-1800eV with two major branches

• Tender, a tender X-ray beamline covering an energy range of 1-8keV with two major branches

• Cosmic, an upgraded soft X-ray beamline with one branch

• Maestro, an upgraded soft X-ray beamline with two branches

2/21/2019 3 | P a g e

To this end, the ALS-U project includes the procurement of 5 new monochromators: two VIA- VLS monochromators for Flexon, one VIA-VLS monochromator and one DCM111 monochromator for Tender, one VIA-VLS monochromator for Cosmic. Maestro will reused its existing monochromator.

We are seeking information on:

• The willingness and capabilities of vendors to design, manufacture, test and deliver up to four VIA-VLS (Variable Included Angle – Variable Line Spacing) monochromators to meet ALS-U requirements;

• Pricing information for budgetary purposes;

• Time schedule for planning purposes;

• CAD models for the purposes of integration analysis and to facilitate discussion with vendors

SCOPE OF WORK

The vendors is expected to consider the design, manufacturing, testing, and delivery of four VIA-VLS monochromators. Complete systems consist of the in-UHV internal mechanisms, UHV vacuum chamber, the support structure, the control system and the system documentation.

The support structure shall be manually adjustable in the six degrees of freedom for alignment in the beamline (Typically, precision shall be 10µm/10µrad and range 2mm/2°)

• The systems shall meet the key system parameters shown in Table A, Table B, Table C and Table D;

• Pricing shall include motors, switches, encoders and control system, and bake out systems;

• Pricing shall not include pumps, pressure gauges, valves and their corresponding controllers and cables;

• Pricing shall not include the mirrors and gratings. Dummies shall be used by the vendors to calibrate, test and validate the key system parameters.

• Pricing shall include, as an option, interferometric encoders to measure the absolute pitch angle between the mirror and grating with a resolution of 0.01µrad.

Key system parameters:

The key system parameters derives from the Cosmic monochromator. They are expected to be representative of the other monochromators.

C.7 Mirror dimensions 300mm x 35mm C.8 Grating dimensions 160mm x 35mm

Table D – Functional requirements

FR1 Selection of the photon energy. The pre-mirror rotates about an off-axis point (M2) with respect to the grating to ensure that the ray intersects with the grating axis point (G1), see figure 1. Excellent pitch resolution and accuracy (from parallel mirror and grating position) are required to reach the advertised energy resolution levels. The requirements are expressed in the XYZ coordinate system, see figure 1.

Critical point Axis name Range [deg]

Resolution [μrad]

Accuracy [μrad]

Speed [deg-min]

M2 Rx (M2 pitch) 1.0-2.5 0.1 0.1 18 G1 Rx (G1 pitch) 1.3-3.1 0.1 0.1 18

FR2 Selection of one of the three gratings. The parasitic errors induced by the actuator must comply with the accuracy requirements in FR1. The requirements are expressed in the XYZ coordinate system (See figure).

Critical point Axis name Range

G1 X (G1 transverse) 3 grating positions

FR3 Assembly tolerances. The requirements are expressed in the UVW coordinate system, see figure 1. The active surfaces of the mirror and gratings must be contained within the specified 1-axis envelopes, from their nominal position (M2 and G1) with respect to the monochromator fiducial coordinate. The parasitic errors induced by the actuator (FR1 and FR2) must be included into the error budget.

Tolerances M2 G1 U [μm] 78 78 V [μm] N/A N/A W [μm] N/A N/A Ru [μrad] N/A N/A Rv [μrad] 1.6 1.6 Rw [μrad] 143 143

Vibrations limits are not specified in this document despite being critical parameters to the performance of the beamline. For information, the beamline optical design aims at vibration amplitudes (RMS>10Hz) below 100nrad in pitch at the mirror and gratings.
