SECTION I. KFO Natural Resource Conservation Youth Project Project Background Information: The Kanab Field Office (KFO) is located in southcentral Utah and manages public land within Kane and Garfield counties. The KFO is bordered on the west by Zion National Park and on the east by Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The Arizona state line is the border to the south and the Garfield/Piute County line to the north. The Kanab area is also centrally located to several national parks and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The KFO is a popular recreation destination for hiking, ATV riding, horseback riding and several other recreational activities. The KFO consists of approximately 550,000 acres of public land.
Project Objective: This trail building project would provide opportunities for youth to receive work experience related to the outdoor recreation field. Youth working on the project would also have the opportunity to develop leadership and other career building attributes. When completed, the new trails would provide excellent recreational experiences for hikers and horseback riders from the local community and visitors traveling to the area.
Program/Project Performance Goals
· Provide a working experience for youth in an outdoor setting.
· Provide educational information to youth working on the trails on a variety of career opportunities offered by the Bureau of Land Management and other land management agencies.
· Complete 17 miles of new trail and two new trailheads which would provide additional recreational opportunities in the Kanab area.
Duties: The successful recipient will assist the KFO, recreation program, with the construction and maintenance of recreation trails near the community of Kanab, Utah. Most of the trail work would be done by hand crews using common trail building tools. Heavey machinery could be utilized if a particular section of trail required such equipment. A considerable amount of technical rock work and fortifications would be needed in erosion prone areas. Work crews would camp at designated points close to the ongoing trail work. The recipient would also provide trail building expertise and daily supervision of the crew.
BLM’s Involvement: BLM staff would regularly monitor the trail work and be available at all times during the duration of the project to to answer any questions or discuss any issues that may arise. The BLM and the recipient would continually discuss the details of the project to ensure the appropriate level of communication exists inorder to safely complete the project in an efficient manner.
Work Schedule: The BLM and recipient would establish an agreeable work schedule prior to beginning the trail work.
Qualification Requirements: The recipient would need to be proficient in building single track recreation trail. Much of the trailwork requires technical knowledge and expertise in establishing appropriate grade and drainage fortifications. The trail crew would need to have already received the necessary training and be able to be self supporting throughout the work week. The recipient would be responsible for onsite crew supervision, medical support, communications, establishing emergency procedures, and all other appropriate training for crew personnel.
Housing: Housing would not be provided for the recipient. The recipient would be expected to camp on location at the worksite.
