2. Brief Description of Supplies/ Services required and the intended use/Estimated Amount:

This is a requirement for tissue bath system, including 8-channel and 4-channel bath components, electrical stimulator, and data acquisition system.

3. Unique characteristics that limit availability to only one source, with the reason no other supplies or services can be used:

This is a brand name request for a World Precision Instruments (WPI) tissue bath system. Unique to the WPI system is the integration of multiple pieces of technology to form a fully functional multi-station research system for pharmacology investigation. Unique to the WPI system are the transducer/amplifier pairing. The WPI SI-KG line of transducer are based on optical detection techniques. No spring tension or other mechanical attachments are employed which are prone to tissue bath salt solution build up and fouling. With no moving parts, the transducer is uniquely robust and less prone to thermal drift and offer a high level of linearity across their force range – crucial qualities for research testing. The SI-KG and Amplifier component of this Tissue Bath System offers a unique combination of features:

• SI-BAM21 amplifier; Push button, Rapid Zeroing function, fine offset control

• Transducers; utilize optical based force detection, no moving parts

• High linear response over transducer range

• Compact transducer design which is virtually indestructible with normal use

In addition, significant preliminary research data has been obtained using the WPI tissue bath system at our academic affiliate, the University of Colorado Denver. This data was obtained using laboratory animal tissues. Purchasing a different source of tissue bath would require repeating these initial animal experiments causing unnecessary loss of animal life and research productivity.

4. Description of market research conducted and results or statement why it was not conducted:

Market research was performed. The SI-KG transducers and SI-BAM21 amplifiers for these transducers are designed, manufactured, and sold exclusively through WPI and selected appointed distributors of WPI. There is at least one Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB), Schemtosh Consulting, authorized to sell the WPI instrument. A search of VIP found 106 SDVOSBs/VOSBs which sell laboratory instruments per NAICS 334516. WPI is a small business; therefore, this can be a VOSB set-aside in accordance with the Non-Manufacturer Rule.
