(a) Description of Work.
Pocatello Municipal Watershed Fence The Contractor will purchase the new fence material, haul the new materials to the fence location, and provide their own material, labor, supervision, equipment, tools, and transportation required to complete the fence project.
This work consists of supplying materials and construction of a 4-strand let-down fence, top 3 strands are barbed wire and bottom wire is smooth (Exhibit 1). Total of 5,702 linear feet or 1.08 miles of 4-strand let-down wire fence. The space interval between t-posts shall be 16 feet at let-down section, the space interval between posts shall be 12 feet at permanent up, and an H brace will be installed approx. every ¼ mile, end of fence, or change of direction. The space interval between wood stay shall be 8 feet with a wood stay attached to steel post for the four wire segments.
Fencing shall be constructed off the ends of existing fence H braces adjacent to the beginning and end of the contracted fence, shown in Exhibit 2. A stretch gate and H brace shall be constructed at the southern end of the fence line attaching to the existing H brace (completing a finished stretch gate). Fence will continue along the delineated route with an estimate of 5 corner braces to the next stretch gate constructed at Wild Horse Divide. The fence shall then continue along the delineated route to the northern end of the fence line with an estimate of at least 1 H brace, or potentially corner brace, based on terrain. A stretch gate and H brace shall be attached to the existing fence H brace at the northern end to complete the final stretch gate.
An estimate of (5) H braces and (6) corner braces will be constructed along the 5,702-foot fence line. H braces will be constructed every ¼ mile. H braces need 2 treated posts dug and a treated cross piece each, 4-6” treated post by 7-8’ long dug 30-36’ in the ground (See Exhibit 2). Construct double H braces (3 posts) for corners. (3) Stretch gates shall be constructed with H braces on either side of the gate (see Exhibit 3), locations will be identified by map.
Approximately (357) 6’ steel t-posts every 16 feet and (714) 2” wood stays every 8 feet with every other one attached to steel t-post for let-down.
Wire spacing measures as follows (See Exhibit 1):
18” between the bottom wire (smooth) and the ground 6” between the lower middle wire (barbed) and bottom wire (smooth) 6” between the two middle wires (both barbed) 10” between the top mire and upper middle wire (both barbed)
Add a wood post for high and low spots.

The Forest Service prefers a 4-wire fence (Pocatello Municipal Watershed Fence and Malad Summit Campground).
Installation of 4-wire fences at Pocatello Municipal Watershed Fence and Malad Summit Campground:
1. Fence line Clearance - Fence line clearance or pathway will be kept within a maximum of 30 feet. Fence line placement may be to one side of the pathway to minimize livestock pressure and will be determined by the COR.
P a g e | 4
2. Alignment – The fence line shall be constructed as straight as possible.
3. Post Spacing, Depth and Height - the tension-cable anchor will be fastened to a permanent fence line H brace. The space interval between posts shall be 16 feet at let-down section; the space interval between post shall be 12 feet at permanent up. An H brace will be installed approx. every ¼ mile. Construction should allow each section between anchor points to be laid down. Let down is to uphill of the fence line and post in the ground. Wooden stays are used to attach wire at each steel post. Wire loops are used to hold the stay to the line structure. All wood line posts shall be set solidly in soil at a minimum depth of 30 inches. Steel posts shall be set at least 2” deeper than the anchor. The gate and brace posts shall be set solidly in soil at a minimum depth of 36 inches.
4. Wire Spacing - Wire spacing measures are as follows:
All line wires shall be dead ended on gate, corner, angle, and line brace posts. The ends shall be double wrapped around the post, stapled securely, and twisted back on the stretched wire to prevent the post from twisting. Barbed wire must be stretched tight with similar tension on all 4 strands. The barbed wire shall not sag or be loose in any areas. Exhibit 1 above shows the correct wired spacing specifications.
5. H Bracing –required on corners or any change of direction (3 posts), on each side of a gate, ends of fence (2 posts) or on straight sections that may exceed ¼ mile in length (2 posts). H-braces shall be vertical, sturdy, dirt packed solid and in straight alignment with the fence on each side. See Exhibit 2 for H Brace and Corner Brace examples.
6. Gates – Wire gate closures shall be 12 feet wide, consist of four strands of barbed wire, four wooden stays evenly spaced on the gate. H braces shall be installed on both sides of the wire gate. Locations will be identified by COR or by map. (Exhibit 3)
7. Top Rail- Top rail shall be constructed in riparian areas. Top rail shall not exceed 42” in height. One rail shall span from one post, over a post and end at the third post. Rail
P a g e | 5 ends are to overlap on the ends with one spike driven through both rail ends. The end of the rails shall be pre-drilled to prevent splitting by the spike.
8. Other - Minor realignment may occur to avoid large rocks or snow deposition zones, while still attempting to keep the fence as straight as possible.
All construction debris shall be removed prior to completion.
