Brief Description of Supplies/ Services required and the intended use/Estimated Amount: The unit is a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger (ARM DF535DWP40-40BS Steam Bundle) that uses steam to heat the domestic cold water within seconds. It will supply hot water at a desired temperature +/- 2 degrees at the rate of 35 gallons a minute. Our existing unit supplies domestic hot water to all of building 34 and the departments in the building. The departments in building 34 are Sterile Processing, Surgery, Laboratory, Logistics. The current steam bundle is past its life expectancy and has been repaired many times at a high cost. The Steam Bundel is 15 years old and the parts for the steam bundle are obsolete because of the mechanical controls. We are having problems with maintaining water temperatures for the new Sterile Processing equipment. The new Sterile Processing equipment has parameters of +/- 5 degrees and just cannot be maintained with our existing steam bundle. The new steam bundle would have digital controls that are very precise controlling water supply temperatures. This type of unit also helps meeting the VHA 1061 Directive for Prevention of Legionella.
The estimated cost for the digitally controlled steam bundle is
Unique characteristics that limit availability to only one source, with the reason no other supplies or services can be used: The steam bundle being requested would be a direct and exact fit to replace the old steam bundle. The steam bundle has multiple connections for water, steam, condensate and electrical. The connections for water, steam and condensate are ridged piped and to change them would be very difficult and costly. The steam bundle being requested could be installed on a weekend by Facilities Maintenance. Installing the steam bundle on a weekend would be very beneficial for Surgery and Sterile Processing. Surgery would not have to shut down or have any type of rescheduling. In the process of replacing other mechanical steam bundles throughout the years we have acquired experience and learning how to use this type of digital controlled steam bundle. In the process of getting this type of steam bundle we now have a lap top that interface with the controls and the knowledge to use it. We have had no problems with the new steam bundles that were direct replacements of other mechanical style steam bundles. The low cost of
