316.1.02 Su'bmittals

Prior to construction, submit a Construction Work Plan to the Bngineer consisting of the proposed equipment, rnateriaIs, and operation p:rocedures. lif the Engineer determines that the Work Plan is not satisfactory, revise trne p:rocedures and augment or replace equipment, as necessary, to complete the Work.

316.1.03 Mix Design

The Contractor shall submit a mix design to the Office of Materials and Testing for app:roval at least three weeks prior to construction. The Mix Design process sha!I be completed in arnord!ance with GDOTTest Method/GOT 65 by an accredited materials laboratory. The sampling, testing, proportioning, and dooumentation shall be completed by an accredjted rnaterials laboratory. The Gontractor will be responsible for ensuring that appropriate traffic control measures are in place during the s.impling operations. lnrplace samples of the road structure shall be taken at a minimum frequency of 1000 feet per two lanes; alternating the sample locations to achieve a sampie every 500 lane-feet. Additional samples.rnay be needed to represent rnaterial changes and/ or problem areas. Each sample shall contain at least 30lbs of proportionally blended materials to be redaimed. The

Portland cement u&1=d in the design process must be from an app:roved source listed on GDOT s Qualified

2. Mix materials only when the moisture oHhe materials to b:e used in the mixture meets the specified limits.

3. Begin mixing only when tihe air temperature is above 40 Fin the shade and rising.

Adjust the moisture content oHh e roadway materials to within 100 to 120 percent of the optirnum moisture immediately b:efo:re sp:r,eadingthe cement. The optimum moisture mntent is determined by the

Job Mix Design, and can be adjusted by the En neer _

C. Cement AiJ111llication

1. Apply cement on days when wind will not interfere wil:h spreading.

2. Apply cement at the rate specified on tihe Job Mix Design (as esrablished by GDT-65) and mix to the depth shown on the Plans. The Eng;ineer may alter the spread rate during the progressof construction if necessary. Maintain the application rate within± 10 percent of that specified by the Engineer.

3. Provide b:otlh equipment and personnel to measure the application rate of cement placed. Each tanker of cement shaI] be clhedked b:y u,sing a square yard dothifcertified scales and by determining the overaI] coverage area of ea.ch tanker_Multiple cheds may be necessary t!o ensure that the spread rate is maintained within tihe ±10 percent limit.

4. llfthe cement content falls belowtihe 10 percent limit in the mixing area, add additional cement to b:ring the affected area within the tolerance specified, make necessary adjustments to the spreader, and perform additional checks to ensure the problem is corrected. If the cement content is more than tihe

10 percent limil: in the mixing area, the excessquantify will b:e deducted from the Contractor's pay for cement.

5. RJegulate operations.to Iimit the application of cement to sections ffllalI enough so that all of the mixing, compacting, and finishing operations can be cornpleted within the required time limits.

6. Pass only sp:r,eading and mi)lling equipment over thesp:r,ead cement and operate this equipment so that it does not displace cernent.

7. RJeplace d!amaged cement at no cost to the Department when damage is caused by:

a. liyd'ration due to rain, before or during mixing operations.

h. Spreading procedures are contrary to the requirements.srated above.

c Displacement by the Cont@ctor's equiprnent or other traffic.

D. IM'ixing

L Begin mixing as ,;oon as possible after the cement is sp:read, and continue until a homogeneous.and unifo:rm mixture i:Sprodlured. The Engjneer at any time may require adjustments or replacement of equipment if a homogeneoUis and uniform mixture co:nfo rming to theseꞏSpecifiG:1tions is not achieved.

2. Continue pulverizing until the base mixture is uniform in color andloomorms to the following grad!ation requirements:

a. 100 percent passing the 3 inch sieve

b. 55 percent of the roadway material, el!Jclu:ding giravel, passes the No..4 sieve.

3. Add water as need'edlto maintain or bring the moisture content to within the moisture requirements immediately after the preliminary miXJing of the cement andlroadway material.

4. Mix the additional water homogeneously into the full depth of the mixture.
