OPPORTUNITY TITLE: Undersea pressure vessel to hold instrumentation
Short title: Undersea Pressure Vessel
The US Naval Research Laboratory requires a cylindrical pressure vessel with flat endcaps that is rated for operation in up to 2,500 m depth. The vessel will hold electronics and batteries for subsea research purposes. Results of a successful hydrostatic pressure test are required. Requirements (1-28) are as follows:
1. Aluminum 6061-T6 construction for metals compatibility
2. Hard anodized aluminum base material for maximum corrosion protection
3. Fasteners electrically isolated from base material
4. Packaging Diameter: Not less than 11.79 in (299.5 mm)
5. Packing length: Not less than 48.00 in (1219.2 mm)
6. Nominal Flange OD: 14.76 in (375 mm)
7. Nominal Tube OD: 14.05 in (356.9 mm)
8. Overall length (end-plate-to-end plate): 55.74 in (1415.7 mm)
9. Maximum Design Operating Depth (meters): 2,500 m
10. Number of Removable End Caps: 2
11. Number of Connectors on Side 1 (holes drilled with specs to be provided): 8
12. Number of Connectors on Side 2: 0
13. Redundant seals on all end caps
14. Average tube stresses less than 1.5 x yield strength of material
15. Average end plate stresses less than 1.5 x yield strength of material
16. End cap closure method rated for 100 psi (30 for plastic) internal pressure
17. End cap closure method rated for 10 x empty housing assembly weight (FS≥1)
18. Built in critical seal surface protection features
19. Basic design includes no threaded holes in base material that are exposed to sea water
20. Zincoid install on connectorized end plates for galvanic protection
21. Inside packaging length includes allowance for; deformation at depth, manufacturing tolerances and assembly clearance
22. Inside packaging diameter includes allowance for; deformation at depth, manufacturing tolerances and assembly clearance
23. All fasteners and related hardware included in assembly
24. All seals included in assembly
25. Seal lead-in chamfers incorporated to prevent seal damage during assembly
26. Connector interfaces machined and verified
27. Spare end cap seals and fasteners included with assembly
28. Jacking screw threads provided to aid end cap removal
29. One PREVCO dual seal vent port included (compatible with standard SAE fittings for vacuum leak check and dry gas backfilling procedures)
30. Tube wall thickness optimized for minimum weight
31. Assembly leaked tested prior to shipment
32. Assembly pressure tested prior to shipment
33. Owners manual provided with assembly
34. Two/one year warranty provided with assembly
35. Customer review/approval of critical interfaces prior to start of fabrication
