Scope of Work

Period of Performance: August 15 – October 15

Background

Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Through grantmaking, research and convening it carries out its mission to build the capacity of libraries and museums to serve the public. As such one of IMLS’ primary goals is to enhance learning and innovation.

Recognizing that our nation’s museums and libraries play an integral role in helping citizens build the 21st century skills they need to compete in today’s global economy, IMLS has undertaken a landmark project around 21st century skills. The project’s primary goal is to help museums and libraries envision and define their roles as “institutions of learning” in the 21st century. The 21st century skills project is also intended to help policymakers and other stakeholders better understand the role of libraries and museums in their communities and provide a greater understanding of the value of these institutions in the 21st century.

In July 2009, IMLS published Museums, Libraries and 21st Century Skills a report that outlines a vision for the role of libraries and museums in the national dialogue around learning and 21st century skills; this report also include case studies of innovative audience engagement and 21st century skills practices from across the country. The report includes a self-assessment tool that allows museums and libraries to determine where they fit on the continuum of 21st century skills operations and programming. IMLS also released an online assessment survey to provide a brief interactive survey to quickly analyze an institution’s 21st century strategies.
