1: INTRODUCTION

Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC) desires to contract with a reputable Native American-owned firm to replace our primary fiber optic backbone with a multi-mode fiber that is 100Gbit capable and includes a redundant link between eight IDF closets in case of primary path failure . This includes installing new innerduct, pulling new fiber, firewall penetrations, splicing, terminating, testing, and certifying fiber lines. The Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) closet may require additional cabinet and fiber patch panel installations.

To allow for additional fiber run access, NNMC is including the demolition of existing unused 25-pair copper cables from the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) to each IDF, and to properly dispose of the materials that were removed, per IHS requirements.

2: BACKGROUND

Northern Navajo Medical Center was constructed between 1991 to 1994 during which time the multiple

25-pair copper cables from the MDF to eight (8) Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) were installed throughout the facility. The introduction of an automated patient database system required additional computing networking requirements when the 8 to 12-strand OM/2 multimode fiber was installed. Due to the age of the fiber, its current state is unstable and becoming unusable in various IDF closets. Once the unused copper cables are removed it will provide the possibility of using those conduits for the new fiber installation.

The objectives of this Fiber Upgrade Project:

• Remove and dispose of old unused 25-pair copper cable that goes from the MDF to IDF's

• Determine the best paths for fiber installation from MDF to IDF's

• Install new multimode 12-strand fiber capable of lO0Gbits

• Install any required cabinets and/or patch panels and to terminate fiber strands

• Provide maps/schematics of fiber installation

Current Environment:

1. 1 MDF and 8 IDF's in the Main building

2. Current fiber Backbone: multi-mode OM/2

3. Current max LAN Backbone Speed: 10 Gbps

4. An estimate of fiber footage to three different areas starting from MIS (IT) Server room located on the bottom floor of the main building. A majority of the fiber is 24-strand fiber.

1. To main hospital IDF rooms: 4,687 feet (Main Building)

2. To West Wing IDF rooms: 1,000 feet (Adjacent Administrative Building)
