Questions and Answers
1. For the on call and weekend call, is there a rotation? If so, what does that look like? All of our pediatricians and med-peds doctors take call. Call is from 5pm – 8am, taken from home. A different provider takes call on Sunday night – Thursday night. Friday – Saturday nights are covered by the inpatient provider assigned to that week. On average, call frequency would not be more than once a week.
1. What is the average number of patients seen per day in Outpatient?
1. 10 patients per half day clinic session, total of 20 patients a day if in clinic a full day.
1. Morning is 8-12, Afternoon is 1-5. There is an hour break from lunch from 12-1.
1. What is the average number of patients seen per day in Inpatient?
This is incredibly variable.
1. Pediatric Unit: During the winter respiratory season, we may have up to 8-12 patients (depending on nursing staffing) in the pediatric unit. However, during the spring and summer months, sometimes there are only 0-1 patients. We keep general pediatric admissions (bronchiolitis on NC and HFNC), asthma exacerbations, cellulitis, dehydration on IVF, hyperbilirubinemia, croup, etc. Patients that need subspecialty care are typically transferred to an outside tertiary care facility from the ER.
1. Newborn Nursery: We also round on newborns in the nursery. We have an average of 1 baby born a day, however, this can ebb and flow. It is typically to have 1-4 babies to round on in the nursery per day. We transfer out newborns who require higher level of care (NG feeds, respiratory support, etc.). We are called to all C-section deliveries, but only attend vaginal deliveries if the midwife or ob/gyn has concerns (in general, very few vaginal deliveries are attended by a pediatrician).
1. Consults from ER and Urgent Care as needed
1. How often will the provider be on Weeknight Call? Weekend Call? Once a week maximum (unless you are on inpatient, where you will do Friday and Saturday night), call ratio is 1:7 maximum most weeks.
1. What is the EMR system ? RPMS, the federal government I.H.S. EMR.
1. Are there other physicians at the practice? Information provided on the PWS, under Section 1.1.2
Additionally, when Pediatrics run the numbers, the Chief of Pediatrics found that on average, a provider sees 6 - 7 patients per session, so 12-14 patients per full day, with cancellations and no shows. However, cancellations and no-shows are obviously variable from day to day.
