Salient Characteristics Production / Switch Tamping Machine

Requirements for tamping machine or ballast tamper: Requirements is for two (2) units

1) For tamping of rail track 100 miles +

2) For tamping of rail track less than 50 miles

Capable of packing (or tamping) the track ballast under railway tracks to make the tracks more durable. The tamping process must consists of the following basic steps at the minimum:

Lifting, lining unit moves rail and sleepers under tamping unit into correct vertical and horizontal position Tamping units drive vibrating tines into the ballast on both sides of the sleeper until squeezing depth is achieved Vibrating tines are pushed together to pack ballast under lifted, lined sleeper to ensure it holds position when released by the lifting, lining unit Tamping unit retracts to stowage position, track is released by lifting, lining unit Machine moves to the next sleeper and begins a new cycle

Minimum Standard tamping machine arrangement

Reference system: Ensure Track geometry is corrected (vertical alignment and horizontal alignment).

Functions: Packing of ballast under sleepers, correction of cross level, and correction of longitudinal level. Twist corrections, Track settlement Laser lining, and automatic data feeding by computer recording of track parameter.

Engine: Tier IV Diesel Engine providing power to the driving wheels via either a hydrostatic circuit or cardan shaft allowing the machine to propel itself to and around a work-sites. The engine must also drive the hydraulic pump to provide power for the various tools.

Drive Train: At least a two-speed gearbox, full- time four-wheel drive with automatic speed control.

Hydraulic System: Variable displacement piston pumps with proportionally controlled variable pressure control; fixed displacement gear pump; 24-VDC valves

Max Travel Speed: (30 mph)

Main Frame: High strength steel, boxed beam, welded construction

Wheels & Axles: Cast steel wheels on solid forged steel axles

Suspension: Trunnion-mounted front axle and rear axle elastomeric suspension

Air Systems: Engine driven compressor providing pressurized air for positive brake applications and other air-operated functions.

Electrical System: 24-VDC system with a minimum 175-Amp alternator.

Controls: All working functional controls with interactive operator interface.

Tamping Units: Heavy-duty vibrators. Traversing work heads for tamping entire switch area.

Leveling System: With minimum single infrared projector, nonadjustable shadow-board, Double Barrel infrared receivers mounted on rapid response actuators, and an inclinometer for accurate cross level.
