STATEMENT OF WORK
Dated: 08/26/2014
Title: Private Sector Business Continuity Planning and Recovery Workshops for FEMA Regions I, II & III
FEMA Regions I, II & III want to promote the building of Resiliency and Continuity capability in the Private Sector for Small Businesses operating in the states in their respective areas of responsibility.
Dozens of federally-declared disasters have struck our nation since 2007, including blizzards, ice storms, extensive flooding, fires and utility disruptions. These disasters have the potential to cripple or even destroy businesses of any size that are unprepared for such events; studies show that 40% of businesses that do not have emergency plans in place do not re-open after a major incident. Being unprepared for emergencies can have catastrophic consequences for businesses, investment and income, and the lives of employees and associates. Region II wants to strongly encourage business owners to incorporate emergency management into their culture.
The private sector is central to any recovery, and at the local level that primarily means small businesses. The sooner businesses can reopen their doors; the better it is for the wage earners who work there. The sooner businesses can provide goods and services again; the better it is for the customers who rely on those goods and services. And the sooner businesses can regain full operation; the better it is for the company’s bottom line and for the local economy.
Assessing and strengthening companies’ emergency plans and taking the appropriate, proactive steps will help ensure the safety and survival of business and employees during and after an emergency
Project Objectives
The purpose of the Region II resiliency program is to achieve and promote regional integration, vulnerability management, information sharing, continuity of operations, gap remediation, and an overall improved level of preparedness through an interconnected series of scheduled exercises and formally requested training.
FEMA Regions I, II & III will sponsor three Private Sector Business Continuity Planning and Recovery Workshops to ensure that the Private Sector medium and small businesses have the ability to Prepare for, Respond to, Recover from and Mitigate any disaster that may impact their operations.
Project Goals
• Foster an integrated community-oriented approach to emergency management
• Create capacity to stabilize a community in a catastrophic event
• Augment Continuity readiness for the Whole Community
• Build sustainable private sector resilience that strengthens the whole community
• Create in integrated private sector model that incorporates the varied sectors of FEMA’s private sector programs
