3.2.2 Contractor shall carefully mark up the Drawing

Set to accurately identify the new conduit route for the required As-Built drawing submittal.

3.3 Underground Obstructions

3.3.1 The required area of trenching is known to have

underground utilities/obstructions; however, due to a lack of accurate underground site plans, it is the Contractor’s responsibility to identify and mark all underground obstructions.

3.3.2 Likely underground utilities in the vicinity of

the trenching are Electric, Potable Water, Communications, and Sewer.

3.3.3 Prior to digging, perform ground penetrating

radar (GPR) survey of the trenching area.

3.3.4 Pre-mark the area on the ground where the work

will take place, using white paint and/or flags. Note that pre-marking requirements vary slightly from state to state;

hence comply with the standards for the State of Massachusetts.

3.3.5 Make sure the utility marks stay intact during

your project. If the marks are compromised for any reason, remarking the site is mandatory prior to commencing underground work.

3.3.6 Pipes, cables, and wires can be buried at any

depth, so it is risky to dig in close proximity of a buried line. Observe State Law and standards on complying with a Safety Zone (or Tolerance Zone) requirement. The use of mechanized equipment is prohibited when digging within 18 inches of a buried facility. In this Safety Zone (or

Tolerance Zone), you must dig by hand, carefully, to avoid damage.

3.3.7 Contractor shall determine the final depths of

the underground raceway assuming all work is in strict accordance with the NEC.

3.4 General Excavation

Perform excavation of every type of material encountered within the limits of the project to the lines, grades, and elevations indicated and as specified. Excavate unsatisfactory materials encountered within the limits of the work below grade and replace with satisfactory materials as directed. Dispose unsatisfactory excavated material off site.

3.4.1 Bottom Preparation

Grade the bottoms of trenches accurately to provide uniform bearing and support for the bottom quadrant of each section of the pipe. Remove stones of ¾ inch or greater in any dimension, or as recommended by the pipe manufacturer, whichever is smaller, to avoid point bearing.

3.4.2 Removal of Unstable Material

Where unstable material is encountered in the bottom of the trench, remove such material and replace it to the proper grade with select granular material as provided in paragraph BACKFILLING AND COMPACTION. When removal of unstable material is required due to the Contractor's fault or neglect in performing the work, the Contractor is responsible for excavating the resulting material and replacing it without additional cost to the Government.

3.4.3 Final Grade of Surfaces to Support Concrete

Do not excavate to final grade until just before concrete is to be placed.

3.4.4 Buried Warning and Identification Tape

Provide buried utility lines with utility identification tape. Bury tape 12 inches below finished grade; under pavements and slabs, bury tape 6 inch below top of subgrade.

3.4.5 Backfilling and Compaction

Place backfill adjacent to any and all types of structures, and compact to at least 90 percent laboratory maximum density for cohesive materials or 95 percent laboratory maximum density for cohesionless materials, to prevent wedging action or eccentric loading upon or against the structure.
