3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 General. The Contractor shall refer to the above-referenced Coast Guard drawings and TP 2697 for guidance.
3.1.1 Interferences. The Contractor shall be aware that interferences in way of work include, but are not limited to the following:
• Piping.
• Engine & shaft guards.
• Reduction gear / propulsion shaft coupling.
• Shafting.
3.1.2 Technical Representative. The Contractor shall provide the services of a certified Technical Representative (Tech Rep), who is familiar with this reduction gear system, to accomplish the following tasks – on site:
• Advise on manufacturer's proprietary information pertinent to the system.
Page 15 (Rev 0)
• Assist with proper repair methods, and ensure compliance with manufacturer's procedures and standards during disassembly, inspection, reassembly, alignment, and testing of the system.
The Contractor shall submit the name of the Tech Rep to the COTR at the Arrival Conference.
3.2 Protective measures. The Contractor shall furnish and install suitable covering to seal off and protect all non-affected surfaces/equipment and spaces in the vicinity of the work area against contamination during the performance of work. Upon completion of work, remove protective material and inspect for the presence of contamination. Clean all equipment and spaces, contaminated due to improper protection, to original condition of cleanliness.
3.2.1 Ensure that all exposed internal parts or openings in the hydraulic system are fitted with protective covering (Rags are not suitable protective covers - a sheet of heavy gauge plastic taped over the disassembled components is an acceptable seal against contamination). If foreign objects drop into an open assembly, ensure that they are removed even if the unit requires further disassembly.
3.2.2 Cap all open pipes until actual hook-up.
3.2.3 Keep the work area and support equipment clean during the entire duration of work.
3.3 Inspection requirements. The Contractor shall open the Main Reduction Gear and, using TP 2697 as guidance, accomplish the below inspections and submit a written report of findings and reccomendations to the COTR within 24 hours after completion of the inspections:
• Visually inspect the main couplings and gearing for broken fasteners or damaged parts.
• Visually inspect the clutch mechanisms for damaged parts.
• Inspect the lube oil system and components inside the red gear for damage or contamination.
• Inspect, clean, and record the location of all lube oil orifices.
3.4 Cleaning and flushing requirements. The Contractor shall perform the following in accordance with TP 2697 and under the supervision of the Tech Rep:
3.4.1 Perform a washdown of the gear casing, gears, bearing components, and head tank with hot lube oil.
NOTE
The Contractor shall supply manufacturer-recommended oil circulated through a Contractor-furnished heater to support lube oil flushing. The oil shall be circulated through a 10-micron filter prior to introduction into the reduction gear. Circulation shall continue until a satisfactory oil sample is obtained.
3.4.2 Clean the sump, head tank and interior surfaces free of all foreign materials, contamination, and residue.
3.4.3 Clean all system components (oil cooler, oil filter, strainer).
3.4.4 Upon completion of cleaning, inspect the sump interior in the presence of the Coast Guard Inspector and Tech Rep to ensure there is no foreign debris or contamination. Reinstall all removed covers and close the sump.
