WELDER

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical requirements of the welder s position are based on the strenuous and potentially hazardous nature of the duties typically performed.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

The welder s assignments often require working in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable and cramped positions. The individual is expected to be able to safely and efficiently perform his/her duties under these circumstances and be able to stand, walk, stoop and crawl. The welder is expected to be able to lift and carry equipment of fifty pounds or more; heavier objects are lifted using dollies, cranes and forklifts and frequently are moved with other members of the team assisting. The welder must possess good dexterity and eye-hand coordination and operate a variety of potentially hazardous power tools and other devices.

The individual in the welder position is required to adhere to certain prescribed safety procedures in order to avoid burns, chemical irritations, and other significant injuries and respiratory compromise. He/she must demonstrate reasonable comprehension and communication skills. He/she may be required to work alone or with others. The individual in the welder position must possess a commercial driver s license and be able to safely and efficiently operate a variety of heavy motor vehicles and other support equipment and do so under adverse weather and visual conditions. Shift work, call back and overtime may also be regular requirements of the position.

The welder position requires the individual to work indoors in poorly ventilated areas and outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures. There is significant exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, noise and other types of environmental toxins.

It should be noted that on occasion, while working outdoors, the individual might be subjected to hazards such as rock throwing and verbal abuse, e.g., while performing duties along International Boundary fence.
