The physical and medical requirements for the Motor Vehicle Operator position are based on the strenuous and potentially hazardous nature of the duties typically performed. Any medical or psychiatric condition may result in the candidate s medical disqualification under certain circumstances. Such circumstances exist when: the condition would affect the ability of the individual to safely and efficiently perform the essential functions of the position, recurrence of the condition cannot be ruled out, and/or performance of the position s duties is likely to result in harm to self or others. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection determines the individual s medical suitability for the position and does so on a case by case basis.

Most work is performed outdoors, and can involve extreme and adverse weather conditions. The individual is required to follow prescribed safety procedures. Driving vehicles on and off the duty location is routine.

Moderate physical effort is frequently required to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Moderate physical effort is required to secure vehicle couplings (chains, tow equipment), lift furniture and equipment, or to make vehicle repairs (change tires).

The individual must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently and must be able to do so under adverse weather and visual conditions. A valid state driver s license is required.
