AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

SUMMARY OF THE MEDICAL STANDARDS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical and medical requirements for the automotive mechanic position are based on the strenuous and potentially hazardous nature of the duties typically performed. Any medical or psychiatric condition may result in the candidate s medical disqualification under certain circumstances. Such circumstances exist when: the condition would affect the ability of the individual to safely and efficiently perform the essential functions of the position, recurrence of the condition cannot be ruled out, and/or performance of the position s duties is likely to result in harm to self or others. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection determines the individual s medical suitability for the position and does so on a case by case basis.

Description of Work and Environmental Conditions The position s duties include inspecting, repairing and overhauling major components and systems of motor vehicles. There is significant exposure to dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and exhaust and other fumes. There is the potential to sustain serious injury and respiratory compromise. Work is usually performed indoors on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally, work is performed outdoors under extreme and adverse weather conditions. The individual is required to follow prescribed safety procedures and to use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, respirators and other protective equipment. Driving vehicles on and off the duty location is routine. Shift work, call back and emergency overtime may also be regular requirements of the position.

Physical Requirements Assignments often require working in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions. This includes standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles and making repairs in other tight spaces. The automotive mechanic must be able to lift and carry parts weighing up to 40 pounds. He/she is also required to move moderately heavy items (over 50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. The automotive mechanic must possess good eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity and reasonable comprehension and communication skills. He/she must be able to work alone and/or with others. The individual must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently and must be able to do so under adverse weather and visual conditions. A valid state driver s license is required.

Specific Requirements Visual acuity correctable to a minimum of 20/40 in the better eye, for near and far vision.

Ability to distinguish different colors.

Normal conversational hearing: hearing loss not greater than the average of 30dB at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000Hz in the better ear (use of hearing aids is permitted).
