HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
SUMMARY OF THE MEDICAL STANDARDS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical and medical requirements for the Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic position are based on the strenuous and potentially hazardous nature of the duties typically performed. Any medical or psychiatric condition may result in the candidate s medical disqualification under certain circumstances. Such circumstances exist when: the condition would affect the ability of the individual to safely and efficiently perform the essential functions of the position, recurrence of the condition cannot be ruled out, and/or performance of the position s duties is likely to result in harm to self or others. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection determines an individual s medical suitability for the position and does so on a case by case basis.
Description of Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, repairing, modifying and maintaining mobile equipment such as bulldozers, road graders and other special purpose vehicles. The Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds on a recurring and sometimes repetitive basis. Lifting of objects heavier than 40 pounds is also required and may be performed with assistance from others or from mechanical devices such as jacks, hoists and cranes. The Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic is required to work in physically tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions. He/she is expected to be able to bend, stoop, twist and reach, and to crawl under vehicles and into tight compartments of vehicles and other spaces to make repairs or perform maintenance. The position s duties require prolonged standing as well as frequent pushing, pulling, turning and positioning of parts, assemblies and tools.
The position requires the individual to operate a variety of machines and power tools and to possess good hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity. It requires the individual to be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently under both normal and adverse weather and visual conditions. In addition, the Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic is expected to possess reasonable comprehension and communications skills and to be able to work alone or with others.
The position s duties are performed inside and outside in areas that may involve extremes of temperature and other adverse environmental conditions. The workplace may be poorly lighted and/or ventilated and have slippery and irregular ground surfaces. There is significant exposure to dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, and exhaust and other fumes as well as to noise. There is a potential to sustain serious injury and/or respiratory compromise.
The individual is required to comply with safety procedures including the use of safety shoes and glasses, respirators and other protective equipment.
The position requires that the employee maintain a valid state driver s license.
It also requires the employee to perform overtime as needed and to work irregular and alternating shifts, sometimes on an emergency basis.
