HOCKING HILLS REGION OHIO DEPARTMENT OF

NATURAL RESOURCES

Old Man’s Cave Carved by water over thousands of years, Old Man’s Cave reveals the stunning geology of Hocking Hills. Layers of Black Hand Sandstone—formed when Ohio was a shallow sea—have been shaped into recess caves, towering cliffs, and seasonal waterfalls.

Erosion of the softer middle layer creates the cave’s signature bowl-shaped gorge, while seeping water continues to sculpt the landscape, forming honeycomb patterns and leaving massive slump rocks on the valley floor.

Rated moderate for its steep stairs, this popular trail offers native plants, seasonal waterfalls, and frequent raptor sightings near the visitor center.

Ash Cave The largest recessed cave in Hocking Hills State Park, Ash Cave is a breathtaking natural amphitheater carved into Black Hand Sandstone. A short, scenic hike through a lush quarter-mile gorge leads to its massive horseshoe-shaped opening—700 feet wide, 100 feet deep, and soaring 100 feet high. In winter, a waterfall cascades over the rim, sometimes freezing into a spectacular pillar of ice.

Ash Cave’s name comes from a mysterious pile of ashes—100 feet long and three feet deep— discovered beneath its overhang.

Thought to be the remnants of centuries-old Native American campfires, the ashes hint at its long history as a gathering place. Early settlers also used the cave’s natural acoustics for Sunday services atop Pulpit Rock, a tradition of community that continues today as visitors find inspiration in its towering beauty and rich history.

Ash Cave Gorge Trail is an easy accessible, paved trail that winds through a narrow gorge lined with hemlock, beech, and other hardwood trees. At the end of the trail, visitors are greeted by a seasonal waterfall.

Cedar Falls Despite its name, Cedar Falls is surrounded by towering hemlock trees, a case of mistaken identity by early settlers. This breathtaking waterfall—the largest by volume in Hocking Hills State Park—plunges 50 feet over rugged Black Hand Sandstone, carving a deep plunge pool below. Once a site of travel for the Shawnee, Wyandot, and Delaware tribes, the area’s cliffs bear the marks of history, including black handprints tied to ancient traditions. In the 1800s, settlers harnessed the power of Queer Creek, building a gristmill above the falls, the remnants of which can still be seen in the creek bed.

Today,it remains a stunning testament to the relentless force of water, transforming stone over time into one of Ohio’s most scenic wonders.

A moderately challenging hike, featuring a narrow squeeze near the end and several staircases along the way. This scenic trail offers great opportunities to spot wildlife in the creek, including fish and turtles.

Cantwell Cliffs Cantwell Cliffs, the northernmost stop in Hocking Hills, is located 17 miles north of Old Man’s Cave on State Route 374. Those who make the extra drive are rewarded with a deep valley, sheer sandstone walls, and a dramatic rock shelter that keeps visitors coming back.

As you approach the shelter, the trail winds through narrow passageways formed by massive sandstone blocks that have broken away from the cliff—distinct features created by vertical fractures in the rock. A rim trail skirts along the top of the cliff edge, offering dramatic views of the gorge.

This moderately challenging hike also includes the challenging lower route that threads along narrow cliff side paths and hundreds of hand-carved stone steps dating back to the 1930s.

Rock House Unlike any other feature in Hocking Hills, Rock House is the region’s only true cave—a massive, tunnel-like passage carved into a towering Black Hand Sandstone cliff. Stretching 200 feet long and up to 30 feet wide, this natural wonder is adorned with seven Gothic-arched windows, which provide light, breathtaking views, and a sense of mystery.

For centuries, Rock House sheltered Native Americans, who used its natural “hominy holes” for baking and carved troughs to collect spring water. Later, it became a hideout for outlaws and a source of legend. Today, it remains a sanctuary for explorers—and for bats, reptiles, and amphibians that thrive in its cool, shadowy depths.

A moderate hike with a few hand-carved steps, uneven terrain, and a steep hill on exit. Great for tree ID and spotting native plants.

Conkles Hollow Towering nearly 200 feet, Black Hand Sandstone cliffs frame one of Ohio’s most dramatic gorges. Waterfalls tumble over the cliffs, and the shaded gorge below teems with plant and animal life. Once part of a vast inland sea, this ancient landscape continues to be shaped by erosion, revealing Ohio’s geological history.

Designated a state nature preserve in 1977, Conkles Hollow features

3.5 miles of trails, including a wheelchair-accessible section of the Gorge Trail. Open from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset. Stay on designated trails—no pets allowed.

A paved, easy trail leads through the gorge, while the upper trail is rated difficult for its narrow, cliffside route and greater length.
