HiVol Sampler Kit Specifications:

The HiVol (High-volume) sampler kits must meet all of the EPA’s sampler apparatus requires in the Compendium Method TO-13A for the Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Ambient Air and Compendium Method TO-9A Determination Of Polychlorinated, Polybrominated And Brominated/Chlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins And Dibenzofurans In Ambient Air.

The EPA sampler apparatus requires the following parameters: The High-volume sampler shall be capable of pulling ambient air through the filter/sorbent cartridge at a flow rate of approximately 8 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) (0.225 std m /min) to obtain a total sample volume of greater than 325 m3 over a 24-hour period.

The following diagram (figure 1) is a typical high volume air sampler design for PAHs and dioxins/furans that the vendor shall follow. Figure 1 may be found in the EPA Compendium Methods TO-13A or TO-9A.

Figure 1.

The Sampling module or absorbent cartridge assembly (figure 2) shall be a metal filter holder (Part 2) capable of holding a 102-mm circular particle filter supported by a 16-mesh stainless-steel screen and attaching to a metal cylinder (Part 1) capable of holding a 65-mm O.D. (60-mm I.D.) x 125-mm borosilicate glass sorbent cartridge containing PUF or XAD-2®. The filter holder is equipped with inert sealing gaskets (e.g., polytetrafluorethylene) placed on either side of the filter. Likewise, inert, pliable gaskets (e.g., silicone rubber) are used to provide an air-tight seal at each end of the glass sorbent cartridge. The glass sorbent cartridge is indented 20 mm from the lower end to provide a support for a 16-mesh stainless-steel screen that holds the sorbent. The glass sorbent cartridge fits into Part 1, which is screwed onto Part 2 until the sorbent cartridge is sealed between the silicone gaskets.

Typical absorbent cartridge assembly for sampling dioxin/furans and PAHs. This diagram can be found in the EPA Compendium Method TO-13A and TO-9A.

NOTE: the additional Teflon gaskets required in the SOW are not reflected in this drawing. The Teflon gaskets are three sizes, 2 for the filter to seat between 65-mm O.D. x 60-mm I.D., one for between the filter holder (part 2) and the glass cartridge that goes inside the module (part 1) it’ll mimic the same size of the silicone gasket depicted in the drawing and one inside the bottom of the module housing it’ll mimic the same size of the silicone gasket depicted there. Teflon must be thin in nature @ about 1/64 of an inch.

Figure 2

The High-Volume Sampler Calibrator kit shall be capable of providing multipoint resistance for the high-volume sampler via the use of 5 different resistance plates (figure 3). The calibration orifice shall NOT be adjustable, it will have only ONE intake hole.

Figure 3 The High-Volume Sampler Calibration orifice shall be capable of connecting to the sampling module or absorbent cartridge assembly as seen in figure 4.

Figure 4 The Digital manometer must have to following specifications:

1. Battery operated

2. Have a pressure range of 0-40 inches of H2O

3. Readings to two decimal places.

4. Zero tare adjust

5. Can read Air and Compatible Combustible Gases

6. Accurate to +/- 0.5%

7. Can connect to 1/8” to 3/16” ID tubing image3.JPG image4.emf image1.emf image2.emf
