Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose:
Need: Our research focuses specific circuits and neuronal types that enable internally-generated brain activity to interact with sensation, with emphasis on different types of cortical GABAergic (gammaaminobutyric acid) neurons. Our project aims to delineate the functional connectivity among related brain areas, to identify the behavioral relevance of these circuits, to understand the computations these circuits perform, and to uncover their developmental specificity and plasticity. One of the aims in this study is identifying the behavioral conditions under which different ensembles of neurons are engaged by monitoring and manipulating genetically identified neuronal population. We are heavily using the miniature microscope from Doric Lens Inc for imaging from subcortical brain regions. Our current study requires imaging multiple brain areas simultaneously, therefore we decided to use both photometry system in addition to our current miniature microscope system. Our study will greatly benefit using the photometry systems to image the neuronal activities in deep brain areas from freely moving animals.
Importantly, the photometry methods will complement the methods of miniature microscope and the two-photon microscopy. This will facilitate our research to achieve more comprehensive understanding of specific neural circuits and the relevant behavior.
2. Background Information and Objective:
One of the aims in our current studies is identifying the behavioral conditions under which different ensembles of neurons are engaged by monitoring and manipulating genetically identified neuronal population. In order to address these questions, we heavily rely on diverse imaging/optogentic methods. Our current imaging system came from Doric Lens and we plan to expand the current Doric imaging system by adding photometry component. This will allow us to image multiple brain regions simultaneously.
3. Generic Name of Product
Fiber photometry system for 470 and 560nm
4. Purchase Description:
Unit on Functional Neural Circuits needs to order photometry system for the expansion of our current miniature microscope imaging from Doric Lens Inc. Doric Lens Inc is the only company which can provide compatible photometry system to our existing system to fulfill this purpose.
5. Salient characteristics:
Doric Lenses Inc. is the sole source company which provides the components compatible with our existing system to fulfill our purpose. This system will speed up our research progress considerably. Being able to acquire data from different brain regions simultaneously will be essential to our current study of sensory perception.
