Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the five required uses of funds and the optional uses of funds?

Required uses of funds:

(i) To develop or enhance lifespan respite care at the State and local levels;

(ii) To provide respite care services for family caregivers caring for children or adults;

(iii) To train and recruit respite care workers and volunteers;

(iv) To provide information to caregivers about available respite and support services; and

(v) To assist caregivers in gaining access to such services.

Optional uses of funds:

(i) Training programs for family caregivers to assist such family caregivers in making informed decisions about respite care services;

(ii) Other services essential to the provision of respite care as the Secretary may specify; or

(iii) Training and education for new caregivers.

2. I just want to make sure I’m understanding what you expect for the match requirements?

The required match is 25%. It’s really important that applicants calculate the match correctly. There’s instructions in the funding opportunity to follow. Remember the match is 25% of the total project, not 25% of the requested funds.

(a) There are 2 types of match, cash and in-kind. Applicants can use either or both cash and in-kind as matching funds.

(b) If you are going to use in-kind, please describe the method you used to calculate the value of the in-kind match in the budget narrative.

(c) If you are going to use cash, please describe in your budget’s narrative, the amount of cash match and the source of those funds. We cannot match federal money with federal money.

3. Do you have any suggestion on the 10 page limit?

(i) We currently have the 10 page limit. We’re encouraging applicants to do their best in describing what they’re proposing to do with the funding that would be available, to further advance either their work in developing a Lifespan Respite System or in moving towards a Lifespan Respite System.

(ii) Under your organizational capacity and areas like that, we suggest that you refer to the attachments and give a very brief description.

(iii) When describing project management, we suggest to name who’s going to have what roles and what their titles might be or responsibility, then refer to their resumes for the credentials and experience.

(iv) Remember that, the work plan and the budget, do not count towards the 10 page limit.

4. Is the range of $175,000 to $265,000 for all three years of the project period?

No. That’s for one 12-month budget period in the three year project period. So that $175,000 to $265,000 would be for your first year, your first 12-month budget period. As of the 3 year project period. Applicants should submit a budget for each year of the 3 year project and an overall budget that combines the 3 years, so the total amount of the full 3 years could range between $525,000 to $795,000 depending on availability of funds.

5. Is it okay to have planning as part of the beginning of a grant?

Reviewers will review applications based on the degree to which the application meets all of the scoring criteria. Reviewers will review the application content to learn the problem the applicant is addressing and the approach the applicant is proposing to address the proposed problem.

6. On page 25, VIII. Bullet 4, Grants.gov auto sign and dates the SF424B upon submittal, do we need to print, sign, scan, and attach back into grants.gov?

The auto sign document is acceptable and it’s not necessary to print, sign, scan, and upload to grants.gov.

7. Does the grant application need to include a table of contents?
