About this file
This is an attachment containing herbicide application standards established by the Missouri Department of Conservation for a post-harvest timber stand improvement project at Pea Ridge Conservation Area, Compartment #08 in Washington County, Missouri. The project encompasses five timber stands totaling approximately 58 acres across Stands 44, 51, 52, 53, and 66. The contractor must possess a valid Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator license from the State of Missouri and comply with the Missouri Pesticide Use Act. Herbicide applications are required on girdled trees and stumps of sugar maple, red maple, elm, black gum, and Carolina buckthorn species using two primary methods: cut stump treatment for stumps of any size and girdle (frill) treatment for stems nine inches in diameter or greater. All herbicide applications must include a noticeable dye for inspection purposes, and the Missouri Department of Conservation will conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance with established standards.
The acceptable herbicides for this project are triclopyr ester, picloram, and 2,4-D solution, applied according to manufacturer label specifications and consistent with cutting techniques. Cut stump treatment involves direct application to the cambium layer using a spray nozzle or squirt bottle with a flow rate regulator, while girdle treatment requires chainsaw cuts completely encircling the trunk to expose the cambium. Herbicide applications requiring cutting must be completed within one hour of stem cutting, and year-round application is permitted except during sap flow periods for target species. The contractor must provide documentation of pesticide applicator licensure upon request and is prohibited from applying herbicides to non-target species or areas. A department representative will periodically monitor work performance to verify all treatments comply with contract standards.

ATTACHMENT 1
MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION
RECOMMENDED HERBICIDE STANDARDS
The contractor must abide by rules and regulations set forth in the Missouri Pesticide Use Act. The contractor must show proof of being a Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator in the state of Missouri.
All herbicide application methods including solution ingredients and measurements must be consistent with the label for the chosen herbicide. All herbicide applications requiring cutting must be made within one hour of cutting the stem. Application of herbicides to non-target species or areas is prohibited.
A noticeable dye must be mixed into the herbicide solution to allow for spot checking by the Missouri Department of Conservation. A department representative will periodically inspect work performed to ensure that all treatments have been conducted according to the standards set forth in this contract.
Use of herbicides is required on any girdled trees and on the stump of the following selected tree species: Herbicide shall be applied to the stumps of any sugar maple, red maple, elm, black gum, and Carolina buckthorn stems that are cut.
The following application methods and standards are to be used under this contract (check all that apply):
Cut Stump Treatment – for tree stumps of any size, apply with a spray nozzle or squirt bottle directly to the cambium layer of the exposed stem. It is not necessary to apply to the center or heartwood of the stump. The use of a flow rate regulator is required to ensure adequate and consistent coverage. Year-round application is suitable except during periods of sap flow for the target species.
Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, picloram & 2,4-D solution
Girdle (Frill) Treatment – for stems 9 inches in diameter or greater in size, use chainsaw or similar cutting tool to make cuts into the stem of the tree at a convenient height completely encircling the trunk. The cutting depth should expose the cambium portion of the stem so that the herbicide will be readily absorbed. Apply the herbicide to the cut girdle. See chosen herbicide label for directions on amount of herbicide to apply to girdle as they can vary by product. Application is year-round except during periods of sap flow for the target species.
Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, picloram & 2,4-D solution
