About this file

This is a Herbicide Standards attachment issued by the Missouri Department of Conservation for post-harvest timber stand improvement services at Pea Ridge Conservation Area, Compartment #08 in Washington County, Missouri. The project encompasses five timber stands totaling approximately 58 acres across Stands 44, 51, 52, 53, and 66. The contractor must provide herbicide application services using approved methods including cut stump treatment and girdle (frill) treatment on specified tree species including sugar maple, red maple, elm, black gum, and Carolina buckthorn. Cut stump treatment applies to stumps of any size using spray nozzles or squirt bottles directly to the cambium layer year-round except during sap flow periods. Girdle treatment applies to stems 9 inches or greater in diameter using chainsaws to create cuts completely encircling the trunk, with herbicide application also restricted to non-sap flow periods.

The contractor must possess a valid Missouri Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator license and comply with the Missouri Pesticide Use Act before commencing work. Acceptable herbicides include triclopyr ester, picloram, and 2,4-D solution, with all applications requiring a noticeable dye additive for spot-checking purposes. Herbicide applications must be applied within one hour of cutting and strictly adhere to product label instructions regarding solution ingredients, measurements, and flow rates. The Missouri Department of Conservation will conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance with all contract standards. Application of herbicides to non-target species or areas is prohibited.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION

RECOMMENDED HERBICIDE STANDARDS

The contractor must abide by rules and regulations set forth in the Missouri Pesticide Use Act. The contractor must show proof of being a Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator in the state of Missouri.

All herbicide application methods including solution ingredients and measurements must be consistent with the label for the chosen herbicide. All herbicide applications requiring cutting must be made within one hour of cutting the stem. Application of herbicides to non-target species or areas is prohibited.

A noticeable dye must be mixed into the herbicide solution to allow for spot checking by the Missouri Department of Conservation. A department representative will periodically inspect work performed to ensure that all treatments have been conducted according to the standards set forth in this contract.

Use of herbicides is required on any girdled trees and on the stump of the following selected tree species: Herbicide shall be applied to the stumps of any sugar maple, red maple, elm, black gum, and Carolina buckthorn stems that are cut.

The following application methods and standards are to be used under this contract (check all that apply):

Cut Stump Treatment – for tree stumps of any size, apply with a spray nozzle or squirt bottle directly to the cambium layer of the exposed stem. It is not necessary to apply to the center or heartwood of the stump. The use of a flow rate regulator is required to ensure adequate and consistent coverage. Year-round application is suitable except during periods of sap flow for the target species.

Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, picloram & 2,4-D solution

Girdle (Frill) Treatment – for stems 9 inches in diameter or greater in size, use chainsaw or similar cutting tool to make cuts into the stem of the tree at a convenient height completely encircling the trunk. The cutting depth should expose the cambium portion of the stem so that the herbicide will be readily absorbed. Apply the herbicide to the cut girdle. See chosen herbicide label for directions on amount of herbicide to apply to girdle as they can vary by product. Application is year-round except during periods of sap flow for the target species.

Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, picloram & 2,4-D solution
