2.2.3 Chairs, Bolsters, Bar Supports, Spacers: Size and shape for strength and support of reinforcement during concrete placement conditions including load bearing pad on bottom to prevent vapor barrier puncture. Special chairs, bolsters, bar supports, spacers adjacent to weather exposed concrete surfaces to be plastic coated steel type; size and shape as required.

2.3

CONCRETE MATERIALS

2.3.1 Concrete slump shall be determined in accordance with ASTM C 143 at the batch plant and at the site by the CQC Manager. The slump shall be specified in each delivery order. If the slump exceeds the specified amount, the batch shall be rejected. If slump is less than the specified amount, water may be added in accordance with ASTM C 94, to bring the batch into tolerance.

2.3.2 Air content of the concrete shall be determined in accordance with ASTM C 231(type B meter). The total air content of the concrete, as measured at the point of placement shall be within 3 to 6 percent of the concrete volume.

2.3.3 One set of six (6), 6 inch diameter test cylinders shall be cast in accordance with ASTM C 31, at a minimum, for each 100 cubic yards of concrete placed. Test cylinders shall be taken from the discharge of the truck in accordance with ASTM C 172. Truck number, time of placement, air content, unit weight, ambient air temperature, temperature of the concrete, and placement location shall be recorded when cylinders are being cast. Initial curing of cylinders shall be performed on-site in accordance with ASTM C 31. After initial curing and within 24 hours of placement, cylinders shall be transported to the Government testing laboratory located at the DTRA Admin Park.

2.3.4 The Government shall provide final curing of test cylinders and perform compressive strength tests at 7, 14 and 28 days.

2.3.5 Copies of all test records and test results shall be maintained by the CQC Manager and the Government's lab superintendent.

2.4

ADMIXTURES

2.4.1 Admixtures will be utilized in the standard Government concrete mix design.

2.5

CONCRETE MIX

2.5.1 The Government shall provide the mix design.

2.5.2 Aggregate used shall conform to ASTM C 33, Size No. 67 (3/4 inch nominal size) unless specified otherwise in the delivery order.

3. EXECUTION

3.1

EXAMINATION

3.1.1 Verify lines, levels, and centers before proceeding with formwork. Ensure that dimensions agree with the Drawings.

3.1.2 Verify that anchors, reinforcement and other items to be cast into concrete are accurately placed, positioned securely, and will not cause hardship in placing concrete.

3.2

FORMWORK ERECTION

3.2.1 Hand trim sides and bottom of earth forms. Remove loose soil prior to placing concrete.

3.2.2 Erect formwork, shoring and bracing to achieve design requirements.

3.2.3 Provide bracing to ensure stability of formwork. Shore or strengthen formwork subject to overstressing by construction loads.

3.2.4 Arrange and assemble formwork to permit dismantling, stripping and removal of remaining principal shores. Do not damage concrete during stripping.

3.2.5 Align joints and make watertight. Keep form joints to a minimum.

3.2.6 Provide chamfer strips on external corners of beams, joists, columns, and walls.

3.2.7 Apply form release agent prior to placement of reinforcing steel, anchoring devices, and embedded items.

3.2.8 Do not apply form release agent where concrete surfaces receive special finishes or applied coverings, which are effected by agent. Soak inside surfaces of untreated forms with clean water. Keep surfaces coated prior to placement of concrete.

3.2.9 Provide formed openings where required for items to be embedded in or passing through concrete work.

3.2.10 Locate and set in place items, which cast directly into concrete.

3.2.11 Clean formed cavities of debris prior to placing concrete.

3.2.12 Do not remove forms or bracing until concrete has gained sufficient strength to carry its own weight and other imposed loads without excessive deflection or creep.
