About this file
This document is a summary of survey results related to the "Greening the Commons" project in Yachats, Oregon. The survey gathered feedback from Yachats citizens on potential improvements to a public greenspace, including options for amenities such as a dog park, ball field, and gathering areas. The results indicate that citizens ranked general use and natural plantings as the top priorities, with more specific uses like horseshoes and a ball field receiving lower scores. Approximately 35% of respondents were willing to financially contribute to the project. The document outlines design principles to consider, such as using native and climate-appropriate plantings, creating visually interesting and dynamic landscapes, and addressing maintenance requirements. The next steps include a public presentation, visioning of the space, and a landscape design, hydrology, and maintenance plan, with phased implementation starting in fall 2022.
The related state and local contract opportunity is for a "Park Plan" in Lincoln County, Oregon. This indicates that the Greening the Commons project is part of a broader initiative to improve public greenspaces in the local area.

GREENING THE
COMMONS
Overview
Why: Follow-up to Citizens requests and 2011 Master Plan lack of implementation
Highest marks to planting and gathering area
Middling to Low for specific uses like horseshoes, dog park, ball field
Yachats citizens are generous! 35% are willing to donate (a few conditionally)
Yachats citizens are creative. Suggestions include bocce (vs horseshoes), pickleball, tennis, wiffle ball, parking, community gardens, more dog waste receptacles
Dog park and ball field scores varied between ranking and total item scores
Little difference between full-time and 2nd homeowners.
Methodology
224 Returns out of approx. 900 sent =
25% return rate
All surveys received a number for tracing
/ quality control
Surveys received and processed in five tranches (one per week)
Comments transcribed for first tranche:
others available to review
Rule: No answer = lowest score
Excel Spreadsheet Available (Locked)
▪ Data manually entered weekly
▪ Each tranche tabulated weekly
▪ Weekly totals transferred to Total sheet
▪ All data in Consolidated sheet
▪ Analysis for totals (counts or total), average, primary/secondary, variance
(consolidated only)
Survey Opportunities to Improve
Better equivalence between sections
Show current costs of mowing and maintenance
Seasonality and coastal environment issues
Dog Park picture. (Note that Florence dog park is built on sand)
Note that we had considered 2011 Master Plan
Kids play area is for older children vs current area which is focused on younger children

Comparison
Current Thinking
Emphasize general use versus specific uses
Add texture via plantings and elevation variation (berms)
◦ Incorporate native plantings
◦ Use broadleaf evergreen trees of limited size
Create bermed open space for gatherings, music, and informal presentations near pavilion
Vegetation might mitigate wind and odor.
“Friends of” to evaluate hardcourt, dog park, bocce ball opportunities
Design Principles to Consider*
Ecologically and Environmentally Sound
◦ Natural diversity to withstand climate change
Species appropriate to site including water, wind and sun
◦ “Of the place”
◦ Plants that reflect the environment and attract wildlife
Visually Rich
◦ A suitable level of complexity in plants and paths
◦ Make use of movement and aroma
Dynamic: varies with the seasons
◦ Plants will ebb and flow, flower naturally
◦ “Landscapes are four dimensional”
◦ Does not preclude pruning and maintenance
*Darrel Morrison
Specific Concerns
Safety and Security
◦ Bench and Table “dividers”
◦ New Oregon Statue re. homeless camping
Maintenance: 2 – 3 years of weeding and care. Less after plants established
◦ There will still be areas of lawn
◦ Current “Lawn” requires maintenance
Questionable if area was naturally flat
