Soil Health:
-- Innovation in research, demonstration, outreach, and/or education that increases implementation of one or more VA NRCS soil health management principles (keep soil covered, minimize soil disturbance, maximize living roots, energize with diversity) on biological and/or organic farms. Preferred projects will leverage existing outreach capacity and communication networks to maximize impact on Virginia biological and/or organic farms.
-- Innovation in cover crop management and termination, with special emphasis on high-biomass, weed-suppressive cover crops in agronomic settings and systems in which herbicide-resistant weeds are a concern. Preferred projects will focus on practical field implementation and associated technology as well as education to boost farmer awareness and adoption.
Grazing Land/Livestock Health -- Demonstrate innovative, holistic strategies for enhancing forage production, integrating cropland/grazing land systems and the combination of annuals and/or perennials to reach higher levels of efficiency in forage production for grazing livestock.
-- Demonstrate innovative techniques using traditional or advanced technology to facilitate the establishment and management of forages on land that is typically inaccessible to traditional management equipment.
Innovation in High Tunnel Technologies -- Research & demonstration aimed at overcoming obstacles to the production of high-value crops in high tunnels, such as, but not limited to, using innovative technology to automatically raise the sidewalls when the internal temperature hits a certain threshold to control the climate; innovative irrigation technology; and other “state-of-the-art” technologies that will enhance the economic viability of high tunnel production. Projects that evolve understanding and performance of high tunnels systems
vs. conventional production would be very welcome; this is not a requirement, but an added bonus feature.
Treatment Measures to address the in-stream loading of excess Nutrients and Sediment from Legacy Sediments trapped by Historic Millpond Dams -- Complete the planning, design, and implementation of one or more technically sound, economical solutions for treatment of stream segments that are eroding due to the presence of residual sediment from historic millpond dams. The applicant will be required to document the pre- and post-implementation levels of sediment and nutrient loading in the stream. The solution(s) must meet the requirements of the Virginia NRCS Conservation Practice Standards and the design must be sealed by a Professional Engineer registered in Virginia. NRCS will provide a functional review of the planning concepts and designs prior to implementation. Another goal of this project is to demonstrate the potential for partnership opportunities.
