GPORFI20715, HIGH EFFICIENCY PRESS
QUESTIONS
1.
What kinds of printed products do you intend to print?
The primary product is a 5.875” x 9.125” document size signature for book production.
2.
What paper specifications (weights, coated, etc.) will be used on the press?
Type
Basis Weight
Thickness
Newsprint
.071 mm (.0028”)
Newsprint
.076 mm (.0030”)
Machine Finish
.056 mm (.0022”)
Offset Book
.074 mm (.0029”)
.099 mm (.0039”)
.120 mm (.0047”)
3.
How do you intend to bind the signature books? Glue, stitcher-staples, in-line or off-line?
The binding methods used are saddle, side, and adhesive bind with cover. All binding will be performed off-line.
4.
Item I – Finished (trimmed) book size is 5.875” x 9.125”? What do you mean by “correct grain”? (Long or short grain cut-off?)
The finished trim size is 5.875” x 9.125”. Correct grain refers to long grain cut-off.
5.
Item II – Can you provide more detail concerning the printing unit arrangement? Most heat-set machines have at least one web and four printing units (perfecting), to print process color both sides of the web. Is this machine for black printing only, with two units for changing forms “on the fly”? I have attached a sample (generic) drawing of a typical layout for reference. Height of the folder arrangement is adjustable.
This is a single color press with two perfecting printing units to allow for significantly reduced make-ready waste capability. The two printing units will allow for plate changes on one unit while the other unit is printing.
6.
Item III – The run speed required is only 1200 fpm? All our machines run at 2400 fpm or higher.
The minimum run speed required is 1,200 fpm.
7.
Item IV – KBA will supply a folder. Are the stacker/bundler and palletizer to be supplied by the press vendor as well?
The stacker/bundler and palletizer are to be supplied by the press vendor.
8.
If a bid request is issued, and offers tendered, when is the purchase decision to be made?
We are in the Planning and Evaluation stage at this point and haven’t determined if or when we’ll be moving forward.
9.
Signature Size, 64p, 5.875" x 9.125" Are these dimensions the untrimmed signature size right off the folder or are these the finished, trimmed book size. If these are the finished book size, what length and width is the untrimmed signature you produce today.
A.
5.875”x 9.125” is the finished trim book size.
B.
The unfinished trim book size is 6.25” X 9.5”.
10.
Shall produce a correct grain ...... Does "correct grain" mean the long side of the book (9.125 side) is printed in the web flow direction (a.k.a. "long grain orientation").
Yes.
11.
Folder Questions
a. Is it acceptable for the 64p signature to be run in collect mode.

b. Does the GPO have a preference for a pinned or a pinless folder.
