About this file
This document is a technical specification detailing requirements for a low frequency towed acoustic source system for the Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Acoustics Division. The system is intended for underwater acoustic research including passive listening, active environmental propagation, and measurements against targets of interest in both shallow and deep-ocean environments.
The specifications call for two C-BASS acoustic projectors operating in the 30-700 Hz frequency band with a source level of 190 dB re 1 µPa at 1m and maximum input current of 80A rms. These projectors are to be housed in a single tow body capable of operating at 300m depth, featuring pressure differential and depth sensors, vibration isolation mounting, and a nearfield acoustic monitor hydrophone. The system requires a 350m electromechanical tow cable with 23,000 kg breaking strength, containing multiple drive cables (600V rms three-phase and single-phase) and sensor cables (300V rms). The entire system must be capable of being towed at 3 knots during operation, with a maximum towing capability of 5 knots.

LOW FREQUENCY TOWED ACOUSTIC SOURCE
I. INTRODUCTION
The Acoustics Division, Code 7130 of the Naval Research Laboratory, performs research pertaining to underwater acoustics such as:
· Passive listening for radiated sound from at-sea vessels
· Active environmental propagation using a variety of frequency bands
· Active measurements against targets of interest
Various groups within Code 7100 will perform at-sea measurements multiple times per year. These measurements often have an end goal of data collection as it relates to the research listed in the bullet points above.
One of the specific projects that Code 7100 works on is a low-frequency active acoustic towed source.
The low frequency towed source allows for collection of low frequency environmental data, as well as various other types of data that are of interest. These environmental datasets are typically collected in areas of operational interest to the fleet, ranging from shallow water environments to deep-ocean environments.
II SCOPE
The contractor shall provide a tow body with two low frequency acoustic sources as well as an electromechanical integrated tow cable. This system must be able to be towed from a surface vessel at a speed of 3 knots while producing sound pressure levels of 190 dB re 1 µPa in the specified frequency band of interest.
