About this file

This is a geotechnical boring report prepared by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) Construction & Materials Geotechnical Section for a foundation investigation of a new wash bay building at the Gallatin Maintenance Facility in Daviess County, Missouri. The report documents subsurface soil conditions and provides engineering recommendations for the planned structure, which will feature CMU block walls. Four borings were conducted at the site between December 22, 2025, reaching depths of 16.5 feet. The investigation included Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), pocket penetrometer testing, unconfined compression testing, and soil classification analysis. Boring locations were distributed across the building footprint at the northwest (NW), northeast (NE), southwest (SW), and southeast (SE) corners of the planned structure.

The subsurface conditions revealed a consistent stratigraphy consisting of 0.6 to 0.8 feet of gravel overlying very stiff to hard lean clay extending to 16.5 feet depth. Fill material composed of native lean clay soils, free of deleterious material, was encountered in the western borings to depths of approximately 5 to 7.5 feet, likely related to adjacent structure construction. No groundwater was encountered during boring operations, though seasonal variation is possible. The geotechnical engineer recommends a net allowable bearing capacity of 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf) for the standardized foundation system, with estimated settlement less than one inch. Key construction recommendations include site grubbing, proof rolling of cut and fill areas, compaction of fill material to 95% of standard proctor maximum dry density, minimum foundation embedding of 36 inches below finished grade for frost protection, and positive drainage grading with minimum 5 percent slope on gravel and landscape areas within 10 feet of the building and 2 percent slope on paved surfaces within 20 feet.

SUBJECT: Foundation Investigation for Gallatin Wash Bay Job No. Fi3125 Gallatin Maintenance Facility, Daviess County

A foundation investigation has been conducted for a new wash bay building in Daviess County for the Gallatin Maintenance Facility. It is our understanding the proposed structure will have CMU block walls. Attached are logs of borings for the subject project, an aerial photo showing boring locations, and a subsurface diagram. Coordinate and elevation data were provided by Northwest District Survey.

Existing Conditions

The topography in the immediate area of the planned structure is relatively flat and gently drains to the North. The area of the planned building footprint is currently covered in gravel, save for the northwest corner which is vegetated landscape. There are electrical and gas utility lines within the building footprint, and these are expected to be relocated prior to construction of the planned structure.

The borings for the wash bay building encountered layers of gravel 0.6 to 1 feet thick. This layer was underlain by very stiff to hard lean clay to the depth of termination at 16.5 feet in each boring. Fill composed of native soils were encountered to a depth of just over 5 feet in the NW and SW borings. The fill is expected to be related to the construction of the adjacent structure to the west and was noted to be free of deleterious material and very stiff to hard in our borings.

Groundwater was not encountered during this investigation but may vary with seasonal precipitation.

Recommendations

The following recommendations are based upon information provided regarding the proposed building and conditions observed during the foundation investigation. We understand the proposed facility has a standardized foundation system designed based on a maximum bearing pressure of 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf). A net allowable maximum bearing capacity of 2,000 psf may be

Fi3125 – Gallatin Wash Bay February 6, 2026 used for the proposed structure bearing in controlled fill or existing very stiff to hard lean clay at this location following the recommendations below. In addition, estimated settlement is expected to be less than one inch following these recommendations.

Site preparation should include grubbing the site. In addition, existing fill was noted in the westerly borings and fill soils are likely to persist along the westerly building wall. The fill was observed to be composed of lean clay substantially free of any deleterious material and appeared to be well compacted. However, if soft conditions, or any construction or other deleterious debris is encountered within this fill during foundation excavation, they should be removed in their entirety.

After making any grading excavation and before any fill placement, proof roll all cut and fill areas. Any rutting or pumping soils should be over excavated and replaced with controlled fill.

It is recommended that any new fill material be lean clay or better. However, use of granular fill material is preferred if feasible. Fill should be compacted to 95% of standard proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D 698). Non-granular fill material should be compacted at a moisture content ranging from two percentage points below optimum moisture content to four percentage points above optimum moisture content as determined by ASTM D 698.

Shallow foundations shall be embedded a minimum of 36 inches below finished grade for frost protection. Individual spread footings shall have a minimum width of 2.5 feet, while strip footings shall have a minimum width of 1.5 feet.

Site grading should be designed to maintain positive drainage away from the building. We recommend a minimum surface grade of 5 percent away from the building on gravel or landscape areas in the first 10 feet outside the building. We recommend a minimum surface grade of 2 percent away from the building on all paved surfaces in the first 20 feet away from the building.
