About this file
This document outlines several Indian Highway Safety grant opportunities from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Federally recognized tribes can apply for funding through three grant programs to enhance law enforcement and traffic safety efforts: the Indian Highway Safety Lifesavers Conference Grant, the Indian Highway Safety Occupant Protection Grant, and the Indian Highway Safety Law Enforcement Grants. The Conference Grant covers travel costs for a training on April 6, 2023, while the Occupation Protection and Law Enforcement Grants provide funding for tribal traffic safety programs and projects. Eligible tribes must submit applications by March 1, 2024 through Grants.gov under the listed opportunity numbers. If funded, tribes would receive reimbursable grants to reduce traffic crashes, deaths, injuries and property damage. The Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs and Indian Education administers the grants through the 20.600 State and Community Highway Safety federal grant program overseen by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Questions regarding the training or travel should be directed to the listed contact.

Indian Highway Safety Tribal Grants (Formerly IHSP Grant Writing Training)
The Highway Safety Act of 1966, U.S.C. Title 23, Section 402, provides U.S. Department of Transportation funding to assist Indian tribes in implementing traffic safety projects. These Projects are designed to reduce the high number of traffic crashes and their resulting fatalities, injuries and property damage within Indian communities.
Indian Highway Safety grants are financial assistance grants for federally recognized tribes. If awarded, funds are to be used to enhance the tribe’s current law enforcement in traffic safety and enforcement efforts and/or child safety seat programs (car seat distributions). All Indian Highway Safety grant opportunities are reimbursable, and performance based.
