May 1, 2023 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s (NASEM) Forum on Advancing Diagnostic Excellence (Forum)

Statement of Work

Purpose/Background

The purpose of this purchase order is to support the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s (NASEM) Forum on Advancing Diagnostic Excellence (Forum) and to acquire the scientific information, products and publications from that work.

A previous Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee reported that postmortem examination research has indicated that diagnostic errors contribute to approximately 10% of patient deaths. The committee concluded that most people will experience at least one error in diagnosis over their lifetime.[footnoteRef:1] [1: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. 2015. Improving diagnosis in health care. Washington, DC: The National Academies Press.

The NASEM’s work is addressing the challenge of diagnostic errors and expanding the scientific focus from errors to diagnostic excellence. For example, current work includes hosting a series of workshops for advancing diagnostic excellence for certain conditions/topics including diagnostic lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Forum is designed by the NASEM to: provide a sustained platform for advancing diagnostic excellence, to engage a broad range of stakeholders, and to collaborate with other groups working on diagnostic excellence. The Forum provides a structured environment in a trusted venue for sustained attention to advancing diagnostic excellence.
