Statement of Work U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Economic Analysis

Travel & Tourism Data April 2022

Section 1- Introduction/Background BEA provides many economic measurements as part of the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPAs). The NIPAs are used for a variety of purposes in setting national economic policy and in forecasting and interpreting macroeconomic activity. They include gross domestic product (GDP), which is considered the most useful summary measure of the Nation’s production. BEA, as the nation’s accountant and one of the world’s leading statistical agencies, collects source data, conducts research and analysis, develops and implements estimation methodologies and disseminates statistics to the public. In this role, BEA collects source data from many specific sectors of the economy.

Satellite accounts expand the analytical capabilities of the system of national accounts. The Travel and Tourism Satellite Account (TTSA) and Ocean Satellite Account are indispensable statistical instruments that allow BEA to measure the relative size and importance of the U.S.

travel and tourism industry, and the complex ocean dependent economy. BEA also measures their contributions to GDP.

The travel and tourism industry is a blend of various industries (e.g. traveler accommodations, food and beverage establishments, air transportation, etc.). Therefore, no single North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code exists for the travel and tourism industry in the national economic accounts, making calculating comprehensive and comparable measurements virtually impossible. Data is needed to accurately measure this industry.

Section 2- Statement of Objectives Annual travel and tourism data for the year 2021 in an Excel file. Data must be available, upon request if needed for historical purposes, from vendor for the past fifteen years. Measures of travel and tourism expenditures in total and by type of traveler for both domestic and overseas travel. Data on the amount of automobile usage to include within the TTSAs. This includes gasoline and related “out-of-pocket” expenditures for the automobile. High quality data collected directly from travelers on their expenditures. The collection of these data should be based on sound statistical sampling techniques and methodology. There are no public sources of data on these expenditures.
