1. Description or Purpose of Procurement The Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP’s) Bureau Waste Site Cleanup, Northeast Regional Office’s (BWSC/NERO’s) Field Assessment Support Team (FAST), conducts groundwater and/or soil vapor sample collection across the state. Wellpoint installation and follow-up sample screening is done in house and allows DEP to assess environmental and public health situations in an expedited manner. MassDEP BWSC/NERO is seeking a vendor to supply the following environmental laboratory testing components:
Description: FAST’s groundwater Wellpoint construction is comprised of four components:
COMPONENT
1. Machined Well Screen Section
2. Machined Well Coupling
3. Machined Riser Pipe
4. One-inch o.d. PVC Well Pipe See descriptions directly below
ESTIMATED QTY PER YEAR
(100) five-foot units
(400) units
(300) five-foot units (1500 ft)
(10) ten-foot units (100 ft)
Well Couplings: (Refer to Figures 1, 2 & 3). The well coupling stock is comprised of Schedule 40, ¾ -inch I.D., black iron pipe cut to a 4-inch length. The pipe is bored out 1¾--inches from each end, leaving a 3/8 to 1/2-inch thick shelf as a stop . The bore width should be just wide enough to allow Schedule 40, 0.50-inch I.D., black iron pipe to slide snuggly into. One side of the coupling is slightly tapered.
Well Screens: (Refer to Figures 4 & 5). The well screen stock is comprised of Schedule 40, 0.50-inch I.D., black iron pipe, cut to an approximate 5- foot length. Slots are cut into the pipe using a laser. The slot thickness is 0.15-0.20 inches. The slot length is 6 -inches and cut as pairs 180 degrees apart from each other. The first slot pair begins 3-inches from the end of the pipe. Each subsequent pair of slots is 90 degrees and 3-inches apart to the previous slot pair, for a total of 6 pairs of slots. Finally, a solid steel tip is inserted at the bottom end of the pipe. The steel tip is approximately 1.75 to 2- inches in length, with an additional ¾-inch portion of the steel tip inserted into the pipe and tack welded into place, with a minimum of 3 to 4 tack point locations.
NOTE: Samples of the wellscreen and coupling are available upon request.
